Things That Are Surprisingly Bigger Than You Probably Thought
The most amazing thing about the Guinness World Record book is that you say "wow" quite a bit. You have to appreciate what people are doing in the world, even if it means getting their name in some record book.
But, the best part of that book was the biggest things. Anything in that section would stand out like a sore thumb. These are the things that are much bigger than you and I.
Yao Ming And Lauri Markkanen
An NBA Hall of Famer is beside an up-and-coming NBA prospect. Yao Ming, who stands at 7'6", was a legend on the court during his time with the Houston Rockets. The day he was drafted, he was at home in China with his family.
For Markkanen, he's already making a name for himself very early in his NBA career. The Finnish basketball player, who'slisted as a 7-footer, attended Arizona in 2016 as he would be drafted seventh overall by the Chicago Bulls in 2017.
The Great Pyramid Of Giza Compared To A Human
Apparently, the pyramid used to be covered in smooth white limestone with a gold cap. Imagine being alive during those ancient times and coming across this thing, especially at a time when people had never see anything taller than a tree!
The fact that you can barely see her sitting at the bottom is really breathtaking altogether. Seriously, just imagine climbing this! You'd feel like you're on top of the world!
Quetzalcoatlus Northropi Model Vs. Human
Here's a 1.8 m man standing next to the largest known flying animal to ever exist. Thank goodness this is just a model. Could you imagine this big of a bird flocking over us and thinking every time they're going to swallow us whole?
I've had a nightmare like that before and it's no fun. The fact that their wings and body are very bat-like makes their size even creepier. I'm so happy this went extinct a long time ago.
Wind Turbine Blade
This is kind of small actually. The latest generation for off-shore wind parks will exceed 100 meters blade size. That's about 110 yards, but that's till pretty darn big.
They sure feel big when you're right next to them. Seeing this piece is something that would be cool for a field trip. It would be an experience for anyone to check out because wind turbines are magnificent.
Look Behind The Truck
Oh my god, that looks like a toy bus, but it's actually not. It took me forever to find the bus that obviously took a wrong turn on this fieldtrip.
That bus is feeling pretty lonely out here. However, the bus has a conscience and a mind. The lonely transportation vehicle is all like "Gee, when I grow up, I want to be a dump truck!" And unfortunately, the bus never got that wish to come true.
This Is How Many Earths Would Fit Inside The Sun
Imagine how many suns would fit in a galaxy? Probably quite a lot because it's big freaking place! A visual representation of how many Earths could fit inside the sun is something you don't see everyday.
It's significantly bigger than that Big Baller Brand too. Nonetheless, this is how many M&M's would fit inside my mouth because I've always been told I have a big mouth.
One Of The Props That Was Used For The LOTR Movies
Now, that would be a pain in the butt to drag across middle Earth. Even trying to put this thing on your finger is pretty much impossible. No wonder why Frodo felt it was getting heavier and heavier with each movie being made.
If Andre the Giant was still around, I don't even think that ring would fit on his mighty hands. But the only thought that comes to my mind is this "My precioussssss."
This Is How Big Some Road Signs Are
Some people still miss the exit on the highway even with these monster signs plastered all along the way. It actually looks like an Olympic sized swimming pool but it has be to huge so every driver knows where they're going.
It's really cool someone got a glimpse of what street signs are like up close and in person. And to think that some people still can't see them, especially without glasses.
Giant African Land Snail
What a cute little snail this guy is! What I love here is that the snail appears to be looking at the camera, like it's modeling for the first time. That almost looks cuddly soft like a cat.
Interestingly enough, my friend had a snail of that size. That thing almost engulfed my hand when he fully ventured out his shell. And no, I wasn't slimly at all. The little guy just wanted to say hi.
A Traffic Light
Okay, talk about making an impression here. Not the girl, but the traffic light. They look a lot smaller when they're dangling above the street. However, the same could be said about most warning signs too.
Interestingly enough, they aren't light at all. Those lights are frighteningly heavy and we drive under them all of the time. The next time they swing during a thunderstorm, I'll be making sure to stay out from underneath them from now on.
Eagle Talon Vs. Human Hand
Don't mess with an eagle. The human is trying to form a rock shape but the eagle is trying to win this round. I once had an eagle on my arm and I was shocked by how huge their talons are.
It's amazing stuff, and if you ever heard of bear paw burgers, these claws put them to shame. One thing's for sure, one of them needs to cut their nails ASAP.
The Size Of A Blue Whale's Heart
Woah, this is insane! It's much bigger than the shoe size of NBA Hall of Famer Shaquille O'Neal. But, it's actually just a model of a blue whale's heart, so there's no need to freak out.
The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia has a model heart you can wander through. Also, there is a museum in Te Papa in New Zealand, where you could walk through the whole whale heart. Now, that's impressive. I never knew I needed to walk through a whale's heart until now.
Here's The (Size) Difference Between $10,000 In 1's, And 100's
I find the difference between the newer 100s and the older 1s to be incredibly interesting. Those 100s are certainly brand new, just look how clear and colorful it looks.
The condition of the fabric making up the notes is quite staggering. I would take either pile and save the money for a house since the market is so darn expensive these days. But really though, who's the person with $20,000 on their desk?
A Wolf Compared To Coyotes
Those coyotes are like "No way man, I'm getting out of here!" Meanwhile, the wolf is like "What? I'm not the big bad wolf from The Three Little Pigs!" Either way, the coyotes are making a run for it.
It's impressive since it does sum up the differences between the two beasts. The wolf is hungry and it doesn't care if you're a coyote or not. They just want something to munch on.
The Size Of This 400,000 Volt Underground Cable
These cables are fiber optic. They are pretty small and light too. The actual fibers are nothing but a few millimeters in diameter. With a mantle of plastic and steel wires, the whole cable may be around the diameter of a garden water hose.
That person should sell those cables and use the money they need to buy new gloves for work. And no, you cannot plug your Smart Car into this.
A Moose On The Loose
Oh my goodness! These giants are all over Canada and they're pretty chill too. Don't worry, a moose will not eat you, but they might use their horns to knock you out of the way.
This particular moose is on the loose, but perhaps they're on their way somewhere? It could be a stroll through the parking lot, but the moose is after something. That moose is going to make a run for the drive-thru at Tim Hortons for their timbits.
Giant Leatherback Sea Turtle
What a beautiful animal. It's much bigger then I would have imagine. Leatherback turtles come out of the water to lay eggs, and they are huge in person. It's pretty amazing just how much space this turtle is taking up on the beach, but I think she deserves it.
Even the lady is pleased to meet this big animal! The only thing I'm concerned about is stumbling over it in the dark on that beach.
The Largest Tree In The World
That's a beautiful tree. I'd be so paranoid that it would for some reason fall over at any given moment. I've had a few friends visit this tree and they were lall eft impressed.
Seriously, the pictures don't do any justice. They're so big that you can't quite process it, and instead you start to feel like you're the one that shrank. This is what happens when you actually leave a tree be for a few hundred years.
Titanic Vs. Modern Day Cruise Ship
Judged by its tonnage, a measure of volume for a ship, the MS Allure of the Seas is at 225,282 GT. Essentially, it's five times larger than the boat that sank in 1912.
The Titanic is at 46,326 GT. The comparison is an approximation as the tonnage rules have changed over the years. The image tells the story, and really goes to show how much cruise boats have drastically grown over the last 100 years.
A Fully grown Wombat Is Massive
The common wombat is is marsupial, and one of three now extinct species of ancient wombats. While they may be small when they're young, it's clear that some of them can grow to be absolutely massive.
If you were ever thinking of getting a wombat as a household pet, this picture may end up changing your mind, or not. Some people can't resists giant, cuddling animals, although we don't blame them.
A Humpback Whale Compared To A Human
Wow, we admire whatever brave human would ever get that close to a sea animal. Personally, I would rather go up against a great white shark than something this size. Humpback whales are a species of baleen whale with adults weighing around 39-52 feet and weighing between 38-33 tons.
They can be found in oceans and seas all over the world, and are known to migrate up to 16,000 miles each year.
Never Going In The Ocean Again...
The saltwater crocodile is the largest living reptile and riparian predator in the world. Some can reach up to the size of over 20 feet in length and weighing over 1,000 pounds! While males are much larger than females, the females are still formidable predators.
Although these monsters can live in marine environments, they often inhabit rivers, estuaries, and lagoons. When it attacks prey, they are sometimes swallowed and have even been known to eat large sharks.
If The Moon Was Replaced By Saturn
If the moon was replaced by Saturn, this is a glimpse of what it would be like looking into the night sky. While this may be amazing to look at, we must remember the importance that the Moon is to our planet.
We would no longer have dark nights and total eclipses around the sun would be much more frequent if they were caused by Saturn rather than our own moon.
A Gorilla's Hand
Even though were are extremely close genetically, it's clear that humans have a long way to go in size. As you can see from the size of a silver back gorilla's hand compared to ours, these are massive primates. These gorillas are ground-dwelling considering their size and are herbaceous for the most part.
They are the largest-living primate and their DNA as 95-99% similar to that of humans, closer than many would think!
Michelangelo's David
David is a Renaissance marble sculptor created by Michelangelo between 1501 and 1504. The statue stands an astounding 17 feet tall, representing the Biblical hero David who fought and killed the giant Goliath.
It was originally commissioned to one of many statues of prophets for the Florence Cathedral, but was moved to the Galleria dell' Accademia in 1873, and the original was replaced by a replica. Today, the statue is considered to be one of Florence's most prized pieces of art.
Giant Manta Ray
This photo is from 1933 when a New York silk manufacturer named A.L. Kahn was vacationing in Florida when his anchor accidentally snagged a massive manta ray. After help from the Coast Guard and local fishermen, the manta ray was killed and dragged to shore.
Although this image is only the taxidermy of the massive beast, it is the exact size of the massive fish that found itself on the other end of Kahn's anchor.
Bear Claw And Human Hand
Grizzly bear claws have been described as being as useful as a large Swiss Army knife. Luckily for bears, they're attached to their bodies. They have the ability to snag numerous fish out of rivers, dig deep underground, and of course rip through tree trunks.
The claws themselves can grow up to be four inches long and are straighter than other predators such as a lion. This allows them to dig and climb much easier.
US And The Moon
The moon helps to regulate our planet's oceanic tides, stabilize our tilt, and even produces solar eclipse's for our pleasure. However, the moon is only are a quarter of the Earth's diameter and only around 1/8th's of its total mass. However, it is still considered large compared to most other moons that we know of.
This being considered, the United States is around half the size of the circumference of the moon, which is crazy to think about when you look at it in the night sky.
The Size Of Russia
Amazingly, Russia is around 1.8x the United States and 70x the the size of the United Kingdom. It is approximately 6,612,100 square miles and is the largest country in the world in terms of area.
In total, it covers around one-eight of the entire globe of Earth's inhabited area and is the ninth most populous with a population of over 144 million people as of December 2017.
The Doors To The United States National Archives
The entrance to the United States National Archives are marked by two massive bronze doors. Behind these doors you can view the Declaration of Independence, Constitution, Bill of Rights, as well as numerous other treasures of the United States.
The doors are 37 feet and 7 inches high. They are also 11 inches thick, with each individual door weighing around 6.5 tons. The doors were established in 1935 and are opened everyday by guards using a key.
Goliath Is Right
The Atlantic Goliath grouper fish, otherwise known as a "jewfish," can be found in the shallow tropical water of the Atlantic Ocean, typically near coral and artificial reefs. They have been known to grow to incredible sizes with some growing to over 8 feet long and weighing around 800 pounds.
Sadly, they're considered fine food and are heavily sought at by fisherman from all around the world. They eat crustaceans, fish, octopuses, sea turtles, sharks, and barracudas, explaining their size.
Aircraft Carrier Anchor Chains
On the USS Ford, the chain weighs around 30,000 pounds being 1,440 feet long with each link weighing 136 pounds. These are the chains that are used on aircraft carriers, which need that much strength in order to hold them down in the open ocean.
We hope that these workers are being extremely careful when working with these chains, because if one lands on you it could be catastrophic.
Walrus' Can Get Pretty Big
The walrus is a marine mammal that are known to live throughout the North Pole it the Arctic Ocean and other subarctic seas in the Northern Hemisphere. The walrus is divided into three species and are recognized by their massive tusks, whiskers, and size.
They can weigh more than 4,400 pounds surprisingly live in shallow water considering their size. They live on sea ice and mollusks, however, you might not want to stand by one like this guy!
The World's Largest Clock
TheMakkah Royal Clock Tower Hotel, Mecca, Saudi Arabia is the largest clock tower and clock in the world, and is also one of the world's tallest buildings. It is 1,972 feet tall and is a government owned structure. The structure has one clock one each of its four side and are each 141ft x 141f.
We're not too sure what these two men are doing sitting on the edge, but they better hope that the hour bell doesn't ring anytime soon!
Antarctica
It's clear that the entire United States can easily fit in all of Antarctica with plenty of room to share. It is the world's southernmost continent and is around 5,400,000 square miles. It is nearly 2x the size of Australia and is 98% covered in ice.
All of that ice averages 6,200 feet of thickness, making it the coldest continent in the entire world. You wouldn't want to find yourself trapped here like some poor unfortunate souls have.
67P/C–G Comet Compared To Los Angeles
Before we ever landed a probe on Comet 67P/C-G, Rosetta, a rendition was made in order to show the sheer size of the flying space rock. A bit astounding to look at, just imagine if that were to actually crash into Earth. The comet is originally from the Kuiper belt with a current orbital period of 6.45 years.
This photo was made by combining a picture of Los Angeles with the photos taken from the Philae probe that was in orbit around the comet's nucleus.
People Used To Hunt These?
The America bison or "buffalo" is a North American species of bison that once grazed freely in the grasslands of North America in gigantic herds. Unfortunately, they were almost completely extinct after a massive slaughter of them during the 19th century. They can grow to be up 11 feet long ad weigh well over 2,000 pounds.
Although they range in size, there's no such thing as a small buffalo. It's truly unfortunate that these massive beasts were almost completely wiped out by people from their native land.
The Sperm Whale is No Joke
The sperm whale is the largest toothed whale and largest toothed predator in the entire world. it is the only living member of the genus Physeter and is one of three extinct sperm whale families. A mature averages being 52 feet long although some have been known to reach 67 feet.
In addition, they have the biggest brains in the world and have been known to dive down over 7,000 feet underwater.
They Don't Have Elephant In Their Name For No Reason
Almost coming to extinction in the 19th century due to hunting, elephant seals have made a miraculous recovery. They are massive earless seals that have two species - northern and southern. At birth, they weigh around 80 pounds and are four feet long, plenty of room to grow.
Southern bulls can reach up to 16 feet in length and weigh 6,600 pounds whereas northern bulls are around 16 feet and weighing 5,500 pounds.
