The woods can be an eerie place. Unless you're in a crowded campground surrounded by families enjoying the great outdoors, it isn't the most welcoming of places. It's not unusual to see or hear things that aren't actually there, as your mind can play tricks on you with all of the shadows and sounds of nature. However, sometimes, there actually is something there, and a typical walk can turn into something out of a nightmare. Don't forget a flashlight, these are the creepiest things people have ever seen in the woods.
A Tombstone That Had Been Moved
In 2005, a local Santa Cruz resident and avid hiker, River Wolf, was exploring the nearby redwoods when he discovered a white headstone laying flat on an embankment. Although he continued on, seven years later, he returned to headstone and discovered it belonged to a woman named Marie Holmes.
As it turns out, that headstone had been removed from its original graveyard where Holmes had been buried. Apparently, Homes had been a prostitute who killed herself by drinking poison in 1898.
A Massive Snakeskin That Doesn't Belong There
While at Riverbed Park in Maine, hikers stumbled across something that most people hope they never will see, especially in the rural area of Maine. What they found was a snakeskin that was over ten-feet long! Much larger than anything typically found in the area.
Apparently, locals have seen the snake numerous times in the area with the police reporting seeing it eat a beaver. Refereed to as "Wessie," the snake is believed to be a pet python that was released into the wild by its owner.
An Eerie Cabin In The Woods
While a resident of Arcata, California was taking a walk through the Arcata Community Forest, he stumbled upon a cabin that would be fitting for any horror movie. Since it's illegal to camp in the area he notified the police.
The police entered to find a living space with food and even a library. When the police returned a few days later, they didn't find anyone there or even the cabin. All that was left was the international squatter's symbol. However, there was no sign of any car tracks, and a car would have been needed to move the materials.
Remains Of Multiple Species
According to one Reddit user, they and some college friends were on a hike when one of the girls they were with said they felt something rain down on them. When she went to wipe it off, they discovered that it was blood. Looking up, they saw a half-eaten deer carcass in the tree.
Apparently, another friend that had hiked in the area had also found a bone and took it home. As it turns out, it was the distal phalanx hand bone of a human.
A Haunting Shrine Of Missing Person Posters
While hiking through the woods of Long Island, New York, a man came across a clearing in a forest that was full of missing person posters. What makes it particularly eerie, however, is that it wasn't numerous posters of the same person but a collection of all different ones.
Although he reported it to the police, nobody knew why the posters were there or how they got there. Even if it is some kind of sick joke, it sure isn't a funny one.
An Abandoned Bunker
While hiking in the forests of Germany, a group of friends discovered a pair of curved periscopes sticking out of the ground. Looking around the area, they eventually found the entrance to an abandoned bunker.
Hesitant, they went inside and found a series of corridors that were either, straight, curved, or led to a dead-end. Inside they also found eerie graffiti that said "Hello Satan, I Love You," strange murals, a pair of gloves, and shoes stuck in the mud.
Remnants From The Holocaust
The Holocaust is known as one of the most horrific events in modern history with millions of innocent people losing their lives At the Stutthof concentration camp in Poland, disturbing things can found not only inside the camp but in the woods nearby.
Now a museum, if you take a hike on the outskirts of the camp, you can see haunting artifacts from the Holocaust such as prisoner uniforms, belts, and shoes. To make things more frightening, it's estimated that 85,000 of the 110,00 prisoners died there.
Disturbing Clowns Attempting To Lure Children
In Greenville, South Carolina, there were numerous reports of freakish-looking clowns attempting to lure children into the woods with money. The reports came specifically from the Fleetwood Manor apartment complex, with numerous of the children residence claiming to have had similar experiences.
Once the story reached the news networks, police set out to investigate the situation and apprehend whoever was behind the encounters. However, they didn't find any evidence of the supposed clowns and it remains a mystery to this day.
An Unexplainable Sphere In Bosnia
Located in the Visoko Valley in Bosnia, countless hikers have come across a 3-meter-wide stone sphere emerging from the ground. Because of the high concentration of iron found within, some scientists believe that the sphere is what's known as a concentration, which is a naturally occurring phenomenon.
However, Archaeologist Semir Osmanagich claims that it is man-made from an ancient civilization thousands of years ago. The fact that nobody knows for sure makes it all the more mysterious.
A Hidden Torture Chamber
When a couple was backpacking in the Rockies, they had gone off-trail when they discovered a small silo. There was a padlock on the door which was unlocked, so they decided to take a look inside. The boyfriend opened the door and they found what looked to be a torture chamber.
The girlfriend described that there was a chair with restraints and chains hanging from the ceiling. There was also a trap door that was locked. Without hesitation, the couple hiked back down to their car.
An Incomprehensible Deer Carcass
When a ranger at Yellowstone National Park was making his rounds around Lamar Valley, going 11-miles from the nearest road, he found something he couldn't explain. What he discovered was a perfectly severed deer head with no signs of blood or torn flesh.
On top of that, it appeared to have been unaffected by animals, something that's incredibly rare. Although he's seen kills before, never had he seen one as clean as this. He noted that it gave him chills, even in the daylight.
A Person On The Verge Of Death
When a woman and her two friends were hiking next to a popular waterfall that was over 150-feet tall, they noticed something extremely disturbing. They found a 22-year-old woman face-down in the mud. Both of her legs were broken and she didn't have a cell phone, food, or water.
The worst part was that she was still alive. The girls immediately called 911 and the girl was taken to the hospital. The girl claimed she and her friend had both fallen off the falls. Her friend's corpse was later found 100 yards away.
An Unexplainable Island Shrine
According to a Reddit user, a hiker and two of their friends went to explore a forest island that they had heard about. Not a very large island, they decided to hike inland to see what they would find. What they came across was the statue of a woman, numerous pairs of rain boots, a chair covered in candles, and other explicit paraphernalia.
Afraid they weren't alone on the island, they left in a hurry. Years later, one of them returned to the island to find everything gone except a bone with a dollar inside.
Looking In The Wrong Place
When a group of teens went missing in the local woods, one Redditor and his friend joined in a volunteer search and rescue team to help find them. While the two were searching their assigned area, they came across a part of the forest that made them stop in their tracks.
There were sharpened sticks in the ground, strange freshly-carved symbols on the trees, and a child's stuffed animal hanging by a noose. They figured they had to be close to the kids when they received a call that they had been found 20 km east.
Evidence Of Something Gruesome
Two brothers went hiking with their friends in the Ramapo Mountains on a trail that they knew of. They decided to hike an extra mile to stay in one of the shelters on the trail. When they reached the shelter, they discovered that it was dirty full of broken bottles and empty food bags.
However, they weren't surprised by the condition of the shelter. What they were shocked by was the bloody clothing and duct tape they found behind the structure. Unable to leave because of an incoming storm, they reported it to the police the next day.
A Mask Behind A Waterfall
While looking for fossils in a riverbed, one Redditor and their friend followed the river all the way up until it reached a waterfall. While searching in the area, he decided to take a look behind the waterfall and was surprised at what he found.
Beneath the water was a copper mask with two hollowed-out eyes and a mouth. Hesitant, they took the mask home with them thinking it might be of historical significance. When they brought it to the Science Museum of Minnesota, a curator told them it had been made recently.
A Trail Of Dead Copperheads
While living in a national park, one man heard the music of an ice cream truck in the distance, something that was definitely out of place in the middle of the woods. So, they went to investigate and began following the music. However, while they were walking, they stopped in their tracks when they saw a poisonous copperhead snake in the middle of the path.
To their relief, they noticed the snake was dead. When they went to continue forward, they noticed a whole trail of dead copperheads. By the time they made it back to their camp, the music had stopped.
The Suicide Forest Earned Its Name
Bodies are found in the woods all over the world, but it's become a norm in Japan's Aokigahara or "City of Trees." Otherwise known as "Suicide Forest," it is in the top three places that people go in the world to take their own life.
78 bodies were found in 2002, 105 in 2003, and 54 in 2010. However, it's estimated that around 200 people a year attempt suicide in this forest. There have been annual searches to retrieve bodies by officials and volunteers since 1970.
A Creepy Doll Head
One Redditor claims to have found a baby doll's head all by itself next to a trail in the woods. This was particularly strange considering this was the trail they took every day to take their child to and from school.
The body of the doll wasn't there either, nor was there any other kind of trash in the area. Thoroughly creeped out, they decided to leave it alone and went home. The following morning, they kept their eye out for the doll, but it had disappeared.
A Dangerous Run-In With A Drug Operation
When two men went camping, they found an open site, set up their tent, started a fire and started sharing stories over a few beers. They were in a remote area, so when they saw a truck pass by them, they became curious.
Deciding to take a look, they followed the tracks until they saw around 20 men standing by a camper, some of them armed. When the men discovered them, they were attacked but managed to make it to safety. Only later did they learn they had stumbled upon meth-cooking operation.
