Terrifying Things Google Earth Captured For Us All To See
Typically Google Earth is a great tool to use to scope out a destination in advance or even virtually visit places you'd never get to go otherwise. Typically. Occasionally, though, images slip through that are downright terrifying. We think you'll agree that the bloodbath on a fishing pier is rather unnerving.
Those Legs, Though
Yeah, if we wanted to visit the El Castillo pyramid in Chichen Itzo, Mexico, we might change our minds after seeing this image.
We're really hoping that the camera malfunctioned in this picture and that this lady doesn't have feet that look like cloven hooves, but you never know.
Take A Dip...Or Not
No one has quite figured out what, exactly, is in the water next to this marina, but one thing is for sure -- we're not going anywhere near it.
Step aside, Loch Ness Monster, there's a new water monster in town, and it looks far more terrifying than any of the supposed Nessie sightings we've ever seen.
Beware Of The Bird People
You know where we don't want to visit? Any town where people donning bird masks line the streets.
This is the stuff low-budget horror movies are made of, so maybe we'll see something like this pop up on Netflix soon.
Mayday, Mayday!
Anyone who is scared of flying will find the photo of this plane crash downright terrifying. This plane crashed in Alameda, California, and as terrifying as it looks, thankfully, no one was hurt.
Despite that, the image of a plane broken in half is enough to keep some of us from boarding a flight anytime soon.
Well, That's Unnerving
Judging from the looks of things, it doesn't appear to be Halloween, yet here are four individuals dressed in freaky masks that appear to be up to no good.
There's no way that we would stay on that road if we came across this group, so we'd be turning back.
The Birds
Alfred Hitchcock would love this scene, but the rest of us? Not so much.
Birds can be pretty creatures, but a flock this size is unnerving at best when you think about the kind of damage they could do.
The Last Samurai
Be grateful that you're only seeing these two samurais fighting on Google Earth and not in real life.
We're pretty sure that if we were walking down a sidewalk and saw these two guys, that we'd be turning around and heading in the other direction.
In The Ghetto
Coming across this image of the Roma ghetto in Slovakia is terrifying in so many ways. The fact that people could live in buildings like this is horrifying enough, but then there's the fact that they have no electricity, heat, or running water.
The small child out front only makes things worse.
Caught On Camera
Of all the things you could see on Google Earth, you definitely wouldn't expect to see images of a crime in progress. One camera caught this carjacking in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 2015.
Luckily, no one was hurt.
The Scene Of The Crime
This image freaked out a bunch of people when they looked closer and thought they saw a body and a pool of blood. Scary, right? No worries, though.
After some investigation, it was found that the red spot was actually just water dragged across the pier by a dog. Whew.
Gone, Baby, Gone
This image on Google Earth is sure to strike fear in the hearts of parents everywhere. It captured a baby crawling all by himself in front of a Gucci store in Taiwan, heading towards the road.
A baby, people. No, the kids definitely are not all right.
Bring On The Nightmares
Before you get too distressed and think this is the creepy bunny from the nightmares you had as a kid, know that it is a 200-foot stuffed bunny made in Italy.
That doesn't make it any less creepy, does it?
That Horse Deserves Better
This horse that can be seen on Google Earth is a combination of horrifying and heartbreaking.
This poor horse looking like skin and bones is bad enough, but the image of him picking through literal garbage to find something to eat is really hard hitting.
Hello, Haunted House
This house is New Boston pretty much guarantees that we will never set foot in that town. No, really. It takes the whole haunted house thing to a whole new level.
Even people who don't believe in ghosts would have to be dragged into this house.
That Isn't What You Think It Is
Google Earth captured one of the most horrifying images in this slideshow with what appears to be garbage cans full of and surrounded by bodies.
Before you call the cops, you should know that these are actually mannequins.
Always Remember
You've likely seen many horrifying images of the September 11 attacks on the Twin Towers, but you probably haven't seen this one before.
Google Earth captured this picture after one of the towers was hit, and you can clearly see the smoke billowing up from the fire.
Spot The Sea Monster
After spotting this image Google Earth took in an ocean near Antarctica, many people believed that the Kraken -- a sea monster from Nordic folklore -- had been found.
Even though this image looks disturbing, a scientist determined that it actually isn't a sea monster, but an area of rocks. We're not convinced, though.
Sand Circles, Anyone?
If you find crop circles unnerving, then you'll be sure to find these sand circles pretty darn scary. They look like they span at least 100 yards and cut across a road.
Maybe next time Google Earth will end the debate and find out just who is responsible for these circles, whether it's aliens or men.
On The Run
If this picture doesn't make you want to lock your doors and windows, then we don't know what will. The last image in this slideshow shows an escaped convict fleeing down the road in his orange prison jumpsuit.
This really makes you wonder what other horrifying images will come up on Google Earth next.
Don't Knock It Till You Try It
While everyone seems to be all in that dogs and cats are the best pets, they're wrong. If you’ve never felt the warm embrace of an alpaca, you’re missing out.
These things might not be the cutest creatures on the block, but they’re productive and useful. Talk to me when you can ride your dog to brunch like this man rode his alpaca. This guy probably doesn’t even know what Uber is.
This Truck Has Seen Better Days
You know those moments when you think your car is the biggest piece of junk? Well, just be thankful it's not this truck.
This truck has seen some better days that’s for sure. It’s lit, but not in a good way. It’s fire, but not like that guy from your hometown’s awful mixtape.
Just Your Everyday Big Friendly Giant
Located in Huara, Chile is a big friendly giant which is capable of giving you nightmares for a lifetime.
Imagine being the person exploring Google Earth and then seeing this. Would you a) immediately find the nearest spaceship shuttle to Mars? Or b) find the country that's geographically the farthest place away from Chile?
Well, This Is Alarming
Not going to lie, trying to act tough while wearing a frying pan isn't necessarily the best play.
Why didn’t frying pan man’s buddies tell him that he’s ruining their intimidation factor? They look badass while he looks like the end result of a Hell’s Kitchen blow up with Gordon Ramsay.
A Wreckage And Efforts To Salvage The Cruise Ship
This picture shows the wreckage of the Costa Concordia which partially sank in 2012 off the coast of Italy.
This picture was taken during the attempt to salvage the cruise ship which didn't happen in full until July 2017. There was luckily no injuries or deaths that occurred which is miraculous.
The King Of The Jungle
Lion King fans rejoice. This interesting carve out of a lion is right in the middle of a field in Dunstable, UK.
It's interesting to note that the movie was actually going to be titled King of the Jungle, but they changed the name when they realized that lions don’t really live in the jungle.
This Is Nuts
On average, over 3,000 people die from car accidents across the world every day. So it shouldn't really come as a surprise that Google Earth was able to capture the exact moment a major car crash happened.
In addition, 20-50 million people are currently injured or disabled from an accident. It’s interesting to note that most road deaths come from young adults ages 15-44.
Ever Wonder What The Grass Looks Like Behind A Jet?
It shouldn't come as a surprise that jets are powerful, but this visual of just HOW powerful is quite impressive.
This is a picture that shows the destruction of the grass behind some of these fighter jets. Its safe to say that those patches of green have seen better days.
Okay E.T, You're Not Fooling Anyone
Listen here E.T. I know it's been a while since you’ve been in the spotlight (36 years to be exact) but you deserve better.
You shouldn’t be living in a crummy apartment in the middle of New Mexico. You were once a star that captivated the world. We miss you, come back.
No One Is Safe, Not Even Gumby
This shows just how cruel kids can be. Bullying affects everyone, even your childhood heroes like Gumby.
How many days do these kids have to take his lunch money? Just because he's a bonified star, doesn’t mean that he doesn’t have emotions or feelings. Our thoughts and prayers are with you, Gumby.
There's A Blood Lake In The Middle East
No, this is not a crime scene, and yes, this is an actual lake that isn't photoshopped. The body of water turned deep red because of algae and bacteria.
The warm water’s high salt concentration is what makes this lake a prime breeding ground for algae that can turn the color of the lake red.
The Airplane Boneyard
One of the most amazing pictures on Google Earth is of Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Arizona.
This site was established after World War Two and has been dubbed the "Airplane Boneyard." It's the largest of it’s kind. After the war, there was an aircraft inventory that numbered over 65,000.
You Can Feel The Heat From Here
If you're interested in seeing the inside of a volcano, but you’re not interested in getting within 5000 miles of ones, Google Earth is your spot.
This volcano is on an island in the South Pacific called Vanuatu. It’s about 1,000 miles away from Australia, which would be the closest I’d be coming to this cauldron of lava.
This Is A Killer View
This skull was found in Novaya Zemlya, Russia and it's there are many different theories as to why this skull is here.
The area was the site of one of the major nuclear test sites managed by the USSR. In 1961 they set off the Tsar Bomba, which was the largest and most powerful nuclear weapon ever detonated.
These Are Dolls, Not People
At first glance, it appears that these are people in this yard. But look closer and you can see that they're actually large dolls. Google Earth captured this rather creepy yard in a small Japanese village called Nagoro.
Nagoro has a population of just 37, including artist Ayano Tsukimi. Tsukimi began sewing and dressing the Cabbage Patch kid-like dolls to replace neighbors, family, and friends who have either died or moved away. Touching, but mostly creepy.
That's a Steep Hill!
Ok, this actually isn't a steep hill, and instead, is a computer glitch that occurred while Google Earth was filing in Orio, Spain. But still, it’s fun to imagine the type of mischief we’d get into if we could drive our cars down a hill that steep, let alone on a major highway.
On second thought, it’s definitely for the best that this is just a glitch and not real life. That would be a death trap waiting to happen.
A New Species Or a Glitch?
We want to believe that somewhere out there is a dog-wolf hybrid that hops around on two legs. But something tells us that this was simply another glitch in the matrix that is Google Earth.
This hilarious screenshot was discovered by Aaron Rose. In Google Earth, it's located at the Far North Bicentennial Park and was taken in June 2016. We wonder if the owner of this glitchy pup will ever see this?
North Sentinel Island Is Spooky
At first glance, North Sentinel Island looks like an unassuming island, covered by a thick layer of trees. But this island is home to one of the last uncontacted people on the plant. The island is also completely untouched by modern civilization.
What's more interesting is that we know very little about North Sentinel Island and its inhabitants besides that they do not want any contact with the outside world and have turned violent. For now, Google Earth views are all we have.
An Abandoned Camp In Antarctica
This small structure is known as Scott's Hut. Located on the north shore of Cape Evan on Ross Island in Antarctica, it was built in 1911 and used as a base of operations for the British Antarctic Expedition between 1910 and 1913.
The expedition was led by Robert Falcon Scott and still stands today, although is unoccupied per Scott’s wishes. Luckily, we have Google Earth to thnk for allowing us to virtually visit it.
In Loving Memory
If you hover over the lowlands of Argentina, particularly in the "Pampas" region, you might see this guitar-shaped forest in the middle of a field. Made up of 7,000 cypress and eucalyptus trees and stretching just over a kilometer, the forest was built for a very special reason.
Pedro Martin Ureta is a 71-year-old farmer who planted the trees with his kids decades ago. In 1977, Ureta's wife passed away and he decided to honor her wish to build a guitar-shaped forest on their farm.
