The first American comic book wasn't created until 1933 and from then on they've only become more popular and iconic. In celebration of the day, these are nine of the most popular comic book series ever printed.
Created in 1951 by Egmont Ehapa, "Micky Maus" starred all of the classic Disney characters. The comic has sold over 1 billion copies, making it one of the highest-selling comic book series of all time.
Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster created the Superman character in 1938 and he had his own comic book in the summer of 1939. The comics have sold over 600 million copies.
Another classic superhero comic was created at the end of the 1930s. Bob Kane and Bill Finger created the "Batman" series in 1939, which has sold a total of 460 million copies.
The "Spider-Man" series, which is sparked many, many film adaptations, was released by Marvel in 1963. It's sold over 350 million copies.
