The biggest night in Hollywood has arrived. Capping off an incredible award show season, the 91st Academy Awards delivered in every way we expected and more. Every big name in Hollywood arrived in style and they didn't hold back.
Not only did big-name stars like Bradley Cooper, Regina King, and Queen Latifah wow the crowd, they also gave us some pretty memorable moment. Check out the craziest things to happen at this year's Academy Awards.
Lady Gaga Pays Tribute To Audrey Hepburn...Again
Lady Gaga arrived in style at on the Oscars red carpet. While her dress was gorgeous no one could take their eyes off the 128.54 Carat gold diamond around her neck. The diamond was last worn by none other than Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast At Tiffany's.
This isn't the first time Lady Gaga has been compared to Hepburn and other Old Hollywood royalty. At the 2019 Golden Globes, she wore a blue Valentino dress that looked similar to one of Hepburn's iconic gowns.
Awkwafina Drinks Tequila On The Red Carpet
Rapper turned actress Awkwafina was all of us on the red carpet when she had no problem taking a gulp of tequila mid-interview. The tequila was hidden in a clutch that was actually a flask.
Jimmy Kimmel's on-the-street interviewer Guillermo was the one who handed Awkwafina the clutch so we are expecting the stunt to be part of a bit of Kimmel's show. Whether it was part of a bit or not, Awkwafina sipping tequila on the red carpet in a mood.
Billy Porter Becomes The First Man To Rock A Gown
There was a lot to see on the red carpet but one of the first dresses was the most memorable. Singer and actor Billy Porter arrived in a one-of-a-kind Christian Siriano tuxedo ballgown. Before he hit the red carpet, Porter told Vogue that he wanted to play the part of both male and female on the red carpet.
The internet was torn about whether or not they liked the bold outfit, but Porter acknowledged that people would be uncomfortable but that "it's not anybody’s business but mine."
The Hosting Issue Is Called Out Immediately
Maya Rudolph, Tina Fey, and Amy Poehler kicked off the show as "presenters" in place of the Academy Awards not having a host for the first time. They made it very clear that they were NOT the hosts but that they'd be dragging on their "nomination speech" for just a little longer than the other presenters would.
Of course, the trio of comedians absolutely crushed their non-hosting duties and made us all wonder: why didn't The Academy just hire them?
Melissa McCarthy Presents With A Hand Puppet
Actress Melissa McCarthy arrived on stage to present the award for best costume design in quite a memorable costume. Her Queen Anne-inspired gown was covered in stuffed-animal bunnies. While her co-presenter Brian Tyree Henry—who was also dressed in a ridiculous costume—announced the nominees, McCarthy mouthed along with a rabbit and puppet.
The bold look led to half the internet asking where they can find a 20-foot long cape covered in bunnies. It also left us wondering, why didn't the pair just host the award show?
Tyler Perry Calls Out The Acamedy
While presenting the award for best cinematography, Tyler Perry made sure to slip in the fact that he was proud to present the award on air and not in the commercial break. The Academy had gone under fire when they announced four categories—Cinematography, Film Editing, Makeup and Hairstyling, and Live Action Short.
After multiple notable celebrities called out The Academy for the choice, they caved and quickly reinstated the categories to be awarded during the live show,
Border Walls Were Brought Up
Javier Bardem had no problem coming on stage firing while presenting the award for Best Foreign Language Film. Speaking his native language of Spanish, he introduced the award by saying, "There are no borders or walls that can restrain ingenuity and talent."
The bit was a clear nod to the issue of the southern border wall that is currently dividing U.S. politics. To cap it all off, Roma—a film set in Mexico—took home the award.
Spike Lee FINALLY Wins
After more than thirty years in film, Spike Lee finally nabbed his first Academy Award thanks to his film BlaKkKlansmen. The legendary director's friend Samuel L. Jackson presented the award for Best Adapted Screenplay to Lee and was just as excited. Lee ran up on stage and umped right into Jackson's arms.
Lee received an Honorary Academy Award in 2015 and had been nominated twice before that. Many other celebrities expressed their desire for Lee to win an award during their interviews on the red carpet.
Chris Evans Steals Everyone's Hearts
After Regina King won Best Supporting Actress, she got caught in her dress trying to walk on stage. As gracious as always, Evans graciously untangled her dress and escorted her up the stairs. Basically, he won the best supporter of the Best Supporting Actress,
To cap it all off, Cap then secretly celebrated when Black Panther won Best Production Design. The actor might not be nominated for any Academy Awards this year but he stole the show in the first five minutes.
Lady Gaga Thanks The 100 People In The Room
Lady Gaga broke down into tears after winning the Best Original Song award at the 91st Oscars. The original song for A Star Is Born was a favorite to win the category and Lady Gaga's performance with Bradley Cooper was one of the night's top moments.
During her speech, Gaga refrained from using her typical "if there are 100 people in the room..." speech and instead encouraged everyone to simply work hard and always follow their dreams. We're not crying, you're crying.
Lady Gaga's Award Show Haul Makes History
With Gaga's win for Best Original Song, she went down in history. Gaga became the first artist to EVER win an award at the BAFTA's, Golden Globes, Grammy's, and the Academy Awards. The win capped off an incredible award season and year for the pint-sized powerhouse singer.
Gaga has been nominated for three Emmy's but with no win. If she can manage to win an Emmy, then she'll only have to conquer the Tony category to join the elite group of artists who have an EGOT.
Wayne's World Is Back In Action
Mike Meyers and Dana Carvey made a surprise appearance at the 91st Academy Awards. The two were tasked with presenting Bohemian Rhapsody as Best Picture nominee. Their appearance started with a legendary clip from the 1992 film Wayne's World where the duo head-bangs to Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody."
In the announcement, Meyer's acknowledged that the song "played a large part in the success of Wayne's World" and that it was humbling just to be associated with the song.
Bradley Cooper's Close Performance Gets Awkward
The performance of "Shallow" between Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper was easily one of the most anticipated parts of the night. While the two began singing across from one another, Cooper eventually joined Gaga on her piano bench and sang into the same microphone which got a little too close for everyone's comfort.
The chemistry that we all saw in A Star Is Born was out in full force on the Academy Award stage. Everyone on the internet saw it so Cooper's wife Irina definitely did too.
Mahershala Ali Makes History
After his win for his role in Greenbook, Mahershala Ali went down in the history books for being the first Black actor to win two Best Supporting Actors—the first being in 2016 for Moonlight.
Ali is only the fifth Black actor to win the category. He also became only the second Black actor to ever win multiple acting Academy Awards, joining Denzel Washington. Above all, Ali became the first to wear a beanie hat to an award show and make it look good.
Spike Lee Calls On Change In 2020
Director Spike Lee has never been quiet about his political and social beliefs and being on the Academy Award stage was no different. After jumping down from Samuel L. Jackson's hug, Lee took the time to thank the women in his life and call the crowd of A-listers to action in the 2020 presidential election.
Lee called on the crowd to "mobilize" and be "on the right side of history, make the moral choice between love versus hate."
Rami Malek Talks Immigration
The Oscars kept getting increasingly political throughout the night. After winning the award for Best Actor, Rami Malek took a strong stance of immigration. Noting that he was a first generation immigrant from Egypt to the United States, he advocated in his acceptance speech for open borders.
Malek reiterated the point by pointing to the life of Freddie Mercury, who he portrayed in Bohemian Rhapsody. Mercury, a gay immigrant who eventually died of AIDS, drastically changed the conversation in the 1980s.
The Crowd Goes Crazy For Queen
To kick off the hostless award show, Queen featuring lead singer Adam Lambert got the crowd out of their seats with "We Will Rock You." The powerhouse performance was a refreshing start to an award show that was known to be stuffy in the past.
The performance also allowed us to watch some A-list celebrities rock out like a dad at a Jimmy Buffet concert. Watching Lady Gaga rock back and forth and Javier Bardem fist bump made the performance that much better.
Emilia Clarke Got Real About Oscar Fashion
Everyone loves watching the fashion on the Oscar red carpet but how often do we think about the logistical side of things? Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke got real on her Instagram while on her way to the red carpet.
The back-to-brunette star was stunning in her studded dress but was kind enough to remind us that she won't be using the washroom during the award show. Anyone who has tried to pee in a wedding dress knows what Emilia is talking about.
Keegan-Michael Key Is The Next Mary Poppins
To introduce Bette Midler's performance, actor and comedian Keegan-Michael Key made a grand entrance by descending from the ceiling. Midler was performing "The Place Where Lost Things Go" for the Best Original Song from Mary Poppins Returns.
With an umbrella awkwardly in tow, Key wasn't as graceful as Emily Blunt was in the character but he definitely could wow the crowd. Maybe Key has a shot at playing Blunt's understudy in the next Mary Poppins film.
Rami Malek Met Adam Lambert And Queen Fans Couldn't Contain Themselves
People could hardly hold in their excitement when these two Queen-inspired kings stopped to chat on the red carpet. Rami Malek, who played the late Queen frontman Freddie Mercury in the film Bohemian Rhapsody, welcomes the actual new Queen frontman, Adam Lambert.
Of course, the two had met previously since Lambert had a small cameo role in Bohemian Rhapsody. Still, people were so excited to see the two kicking it off in person and many had secret hopes Rami would join the band on stage for the show's opener.
Green Book Won Best Picture And People Weren't Happy About It
People aren't always happy about the movie that wins Best Picture, but this year, people were particularly upset that Green Book won Best Picture over Bohemian Rhapsody, The Favourite, and Black Panther. Other wonderful movies that feature an African American cast (like If Beale Street Could Talk, for instance) weren't even nominated.
Green Book may be about race relations, but it's about race relations in a way that screams "Oscar bait."
Spike Lee Had A Bad Poker Face
During his post-Oscar interview, Spike Lee was asked about Green Book's Best Picture win. He, like everybody else, was pretty angry about it— although most other celebs were able to keep their true feelings under wraps and politely congratulate their fellow filmmakers.
Lee stormed out of the theatre when Green Book was announced as the winner, and he later said, "I thought I was courtside at the Garden and the refs made a bad call."
Olivia Colman Won Her First Oscar
This award has been a long time coming for Olivia Colman. She's been quietly churning out brilliant performance after brilliant performance for years. She's won a few Golden Globe Awards in the past, but this year she got her first Oscar nomination and first Oscar win for her portrayal of Queen Anne in The Favourite.
Everyone thought Glenn Close was going to take home the trophy, so Olivia's win was a pleasant surprise. Her acceptance speech was absolutely delightful.
Chris Evans Had A Real Captain America Moment
When Regina King stood up to accept her award for Best Supporting Actress (horay Regina King!), the bottom of her dress got tangled around her heel and she almost took a tumble. Luckily, Captain America himself, Chris Evans, was able to offer her a helping hand.
Regina grabbed on to Chris' arm while she regained her balance, and Chris escorted Regina up the stairs to the Oscar stage. Crisis averted.
A Documentary About Menstruation Won An Oscar
When Rayka Zehtabchi walked on stage to accept her Oscar for her documentary short, Period. End of Sentence, she said, "I'm not crying because I'm on my period or anything."
This powerful documentary shines a light on the taboo surrounding menstruation in India. Rayka Zehtabchi directed the film, and she is only 25 years old. What did you do when you were 25? I bet you didn't win an Oscar.
Glenn Close Now Holds The All-Time Record For Most Oscar Nominations Without A Win
Glenn Close has now been nominated for an Oscar seven times. They say it's an honor just to be nominated, but is it an honor to be nominated seven times without getting a single win? I think it's just a tease at that point.
Glenn was very gracious, and we were all glad to see Olivia Colman win in Glenn's category (even though Olivia has only been nominated for an Oscar once). Maybe next year will be Glenn's year.
Bohemian Rhapsody Won Four Oscars (And Not Everyone Is Happy About It)
At this year's Oscars, Bohemian Rhapsody won awards for editing, sound mixing, and of course, Best Actor. We all expected Rami Malek to win, but we weren't expecting the movie to take home so many awards for its work behind the scenes.
Some people are angry that the movie was being recognized because of director Bryan Singer's misconduct allegations. At the end of the day, all of this Oscar hype is going to allow the film to make even more money. A good portion of that money ends up in Bryan Singer's pocket.
Selma Blair Made Her First Public Appearance Since Her MS Diagnosis
Selma Blair recently announced that she's suffering from multiple sclerosis, but she still managed to make it out to the Vanity Fair Oscar party. She showed up to the party in a caped gown and cane.
It was an incredibly powerful moment when Selma broke down in tears and said, "it took a lot to come out here." We're glad that Selma made an appearance. The Vanity Fair Oscar party wouldn't have been the same without her.
Rami Malek Showed His Love For Lucy Boynton
When Rami Malek heard his name called as the Oscar winner in the Best Actor category, he didn't walk straight up to the stage. Instead, he spent a good few moments making out with his co-star turned girlfriend, Lucy Boynton.
I lost count of how many times they kissed before Rami finally walked on stage to accept his award. At the end of his speech, Rami called Lucy "the heart of this film" and thanked her in front of everyone. I hope these two can make their relationship last. They're just so cute together.
James McAvoy Got Creative For Charity
Actor James McAvoy found a sharpie on the floor at the Oscars, so he asked a whole bunch of celebrities to sign his shirt. He had the brilliant idea to sell the shirt and donate the proceeds to charity.
What a create way to spread kindness. This is the kind of person who definitely deserves to be in the position that he's in. Good job, James! How much do you think that shirt is going to sell for?
Oscar Ratings Rise For The First Time In Five Years
Oscar broadcasters were nervous about this year's whole host-less situation, but it looks like they didn't need to worry at all. According to some very preliminary numbers, Sunday night's ABC telecast scored a 21.6 rating in the metered market households. That’s up 14 percent from last year’s 18.9, which was the ceremony's lowest rating ever. Last year, only 26.5 million people watched the show.
It looks like the Oscars don't need a host or extra fluff to be successful. Or maybe people just tuned in to see if the show would crumble without a host.
Trevor Noah Trolled Us All
Because the Oscars had no host this year, there was extra pressure put on all of the presenters. They all had to be entertaining and bring their A-game. Trevor Noah introduced Black Panther with Xhosa phrase "abelungu abazi uba ndiyaxoka."
He then said that the phrase means, "in times like these, we are stronger when we fight together than when we try to fight apart." It actually translates to "White people don't know that I'm lying."
Everyone Tried To Straighten Rami Malek's Tie
Rami Malek's tie just would not stay straight for the whole evening. It looks like Rami Malek's tie and Freddie Mercury have something in common, if you know what I mean. Sometimes you just can't fight nature.
I think this tie situation is a perfect metaphor for life. Everyone tries to fix it, but somehow, it just keeps getting messed up. Even Lady Gaga got in on the tie straightening action.
Rami Malek Fell Down The Stairs
Rami Malek actually needed some help from the paramedics after he fell off the stage at the Oscars following his Best Actor win. Rami was able to shake off his injury and make it to the press room for some post-Oscar interviews.
I bet it was pretty embarrassing for Rami, though. At least he didn't fall on his way up the stairs to accept his award like Jennifer Lawrence did a few years ago.
Bette Midler Performed, And People Loved It
The legendary Bette Midler took the stage at the 91st annual Academy Awards to perform the Oscar-nominated song "The Place Where Lost Things Go" from Mary Poppins Returns.
The audience blown away by her fantastic performance, and people had a lot to say about her surprising fashion choices. The 73 year old singer wore a sheer, low cut, colorful gown. it was a bold choice for a bold lady. I feel like I need to send a thank you card to Bette Midler's stylist.
A Big Step Forward For Diversity
IN the past, the Oscars have been criticized for being #TooWhite, but this year, we had minority representation all over the place. Three of the four acting winners were people of color.
Several non-white filmmakers also took home awards, including Alfonso Cuarón for Best Director and of course, Spike Lee for Best Adapted Screenplay. The gender diversity in the tech categories was pretty impressive too. Nice going, Oscars! Maybe that's why their ratings are up.
Lots Of Speeches Got Cut Short
When it was time to give out the award for Best makeup and Hairstyling, everyone pretty much knew that the team behind Vice was going to win. When Greg Cannom, Kate Biscoe, and Patricia Dehaney got on stage to accept their award, their acceptance speech was cut short first by some music, and then by producers turning off their microphone.
When Green Book won best picture, it seemed like the microphone was turned off in the theatre, but audiences at home could hear the team dedicate their win to Carrie Fisher.
Congressman John Lewis Introduced Green Book
It was a powerful moment when Congressman John Lewis joined actress Amandla Stenberg onstage to introduce best picture nominee Green Book.
Lewis talked about his own experience fighting for civil rights in the 1960s: "I can bear witness to the portrait of that time and place in our history. It's very real... Young, old, I encourage you to be an active participant in the journey." Lewis' commentary made the events of the movie feel all the more real.
Ruth E. Carter Made Oscars History
Ruth E. Carter made history when she became the first black woman to win in the Costume Design category. Carter thanked her longtime collaborator Spike Lee for giving her her start and talked about using costume design to turn Marvel’s first black superhero into "an African king."
She also tearfully spoke directly to Black Panther director Ryan Coogler saying, “I did my best, and my best is good enough.” Yay Ruth!
Name A More Iconic Duo
We've seen our fair share of iconic duos present together on the Oscar stage, but who would have thought that John Mulaney and Awkwafina would have so much natural chemistry?
They even coined a catchphrase: "It's a big one." If you're not sure what that means, well, I don't think anybody does. All I know is that these two both look fabulous, and I want them to do so many more things together.
