New And Exciting Shows Coming To Television In 2021
As the year 2021 rolls on by, so does the release of some highly-anticipated television shows. Everything from new series to new seasons to epic finales is slotted for this year, and fans aren't going to be disappointed.
From the second season of Apple TV+'s Dickinson to the first wave of various Marvel Universe series on Disney+, here are some shows fans are gearing up to see this year.
Superman And Lois
The CW Arrow-verse is finally bringing one of the original superheroes and his lady into the party, Superman and Lois Lane. In 2021, the DC universe The CW constructed is going to release Superman and Lois, starring Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch as the title characters.
This series is going to be full of crime-fighting, laser-eye pointing, as we watch the man of steel take on his hardest mission yet -- being a parent! But fans of the Arrow-verse are going to want to jump on this series soon, as it's already been renewed for a second season.
Painting With John
Anyone who enjoys watching Bob Ross paint, get ready for John Lurie. In 2021, Painting With John is going to air on HBO. Instead of acrylic paint, though, John's medium of choice is watercolor. The series follows the artist as he paints at his workstation, sharing watercolor techniques while discussing some important matters he's learned during his life.
Part fireside chat, part painting tutorial, this series is great for anyone wanting to dive into the world of watercolor. Or for those who just want to watch a master at work while getting some good advice in the process.
Punky Brewster
The streaming platform Peacock is taking fans back in time with the revival of Punky Brewster. Actress Soleil Moon Frye is back as the title character only now, instead of being a mischievous little girl, she's all grown up with three kids of her own.
This series explores Punky as she navigates adulthood. But everything changes for Punky's family after she meets a young girl in the foster care system who weirdly reminds the title character of her younger self. Punky brings her in, and the family dynamic is never the same. Fans of the original '80s sitcom definitely need to give this reboot a go!
Euphoria, The Second Stand-Alone Episode
The critically acclaimed series Euphoria has gone above and beyond for its fans. In 2021, they're going to enjoy the second stand-alone episode of the series. But, this time, it's not focused on Rue but Jules. This standalone dives into how Jules' holiday season post-breakup with Rue.
Actress Hunter Schafer lays everything out in the open in an emotionally vibrant display of how her character felt during key moments in her life. It is the last special before season two, and something fans aren't going to want to overlook while scrolling through HBO Max's catalog.
Pretend It's A City
The seven-part docu-series Pretend It's a City is going to be something the whole family will enjoy watching. A product of the famed director Martin Scorsese, the docu-series dives into the reality of living in New York City. From the harshness of walking through Times Square to traveling through the complex subway system, this docu-series covers it all.
The piece showcases various interviews, archived footage of the city, and conversations between Scorsese and Fran Lebowitz, a social commentator, author, and actor.
WandaVision
For those who haven't seen the Disney+ original series WandaVision, that needs to change. Taking place after the events of Endgame, this series throws fans back into the crazy world of the Avengers. Only, this time, they're not sure if they're able to trust what they see on screen.
Taking tropes from television series across history, such as Bewitched, I Love Lucy, and Modern Family, the main characters of Wanda and Vision are living the ideal suburban life. That is until things start to get weird, even for two Avengers. And they soon realize not everything is reality.
Search Party Season Four
Dory and her friends are back and funnier than ever in the long-awaited fourth season of the HBO Max comedy series Search Party, making its way to the screen in 2021. Just making it through the murder trial of the third season, Dory thinks she's finally in the clear.
Well, that's not entirely true. Kidnapped by someone vying to be her best friend, all Dory can do is hope her friends are able to find her before something happens. Too bad her friends think she's on a much-needed vacation from the rest of the world.
Dickinson Season 2
A weird blend between a typical period piece and a millennial thrown in the middle of the world of Emily Dickinson, the second season of Apple TV+'s original series Dickinson is something fans have been waiting for. While the last season saw lead Hailee Steinfeld making her way to becoming a famous poet, this season is something else.
Of course, there are still going to be some of those 19th-century jokes thrown about, but this season shows the title character in a new light. Does she actually want to become a famous poet?
The Lady And The Dale
It's the 1970s, and Elizabeth Carmichael amazes the world with her fuel-efficient car, "The Dale." But while car manufacturers want everything to do with this new, innovative piece of technology (the car had three wheels, after all!), there was something sinister brewing in Ms. Carmichael's plans.
The Lady and the Dale is a docu-series illustrating Carmichael's rise to fame, her extraordinary Twentieth Century Motor Car Corporation, and the car that made everything possible, The Dale. Gossip Girl
Hey, Gossip Girl lovers, a new series with a new cast is getting ready to drop on HBO Max in 2021. It's a journey back to the Upper East Side of Manhattan but, this time, it's not going to be all of the drama that happens with Serena, Blair, and all of their private school friends.
But that doesn't mean Gossip Girl is taking a break from texting scandals, inside scoops, and anything to ruin the reputations of the rich and popular. The original series was just the beginning. Get ready because XOXO Gossip Girl is back and ready to dish out everyone's darkest secrets.
The Snoopy Show
It's about time Snoopy starred in his own show! In 2021, Apple TV+ will release The Snoopy Show, a deep look into the adventures of one of the world's most famous dogs. Get ready for some high-flying, fun-loving, and more than one happy-dancing episode with Snoopy and the rest of the Peanuts gang.
Released in the 70th-anniversary year of the famous comic strip Peanuts, this series is going to be created using the same animated style of the original Bill Melendez–Lee Mendelson cartoons.
The Falcon And The Winter Soldier
After a long period of no new MCU content, Disney+ has finally released The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. The series takes place after Captain America handed over his shield to Sam Wilson, aka The Falcon. But, as it typically goes with this group of heroes, it's not as simple as just handing over that iconic shield.
Split into a six-part mini-series, this is the show MCU fans have been waiting for -- a display of how Marvel can be dark, disturbing, and yet pull fans in no matter what. The Bucky and Sam dynamic isn't something people are going to want to miss.
Genius: Aretha
After Pablo Picasso and Albert Einstein comes the third installment in National Geographic's epic biopic series Genius, Genius: Aretha. This particular season explores the life, legend, and Queen of Soul music, Aretha Franklin. Full of drama, real-life experiences, and a whole lot of music, this is a biopic series no one is going to want to miss in 2021.
Cynthia Erivo gives a showstopping performance as the title character. But what else can viewers expect from a Tony Award-winning actress? The series is eight episodes long and deserves all the attention.
Hemingway
In 2021, Ken Burns, Sarah Botstein, and Lynn Novick take a deep dive into the life and legacy of famed poet Ernest Hemingway. A three-part, six-hour-long series, Hemingway is a great option for anyone who enjoys the art of poetry or just wants to learn something new about literature.
Part docu-series, part "live-action vocal roles," Hemingway features some of the finest actresses in Hollywood, including Meryl Streep, Mary-Louise Parker, Keri Russell, and Patricia Clarkson, all of whom voice Hemingway's four wives. The series is educational, bringing together Hemingway's life while interweaving excerpts of some of his famed works.
Shadow And Bone
Netflix is gearing up to release the first season of the television adaptation of Leigh Bardugo's novel Shadow and Bone. Alina Starkov is an orphan in a war-stricken society. But after releasing an ancient power, she's torn from everything she knows and loves to train with an elite magical army, the Grisha.
Action, adventure, monsters, and a whole lot of magic, this series is sure to be fun and jaw-dropping from the get-go, especially for those people who have actually read the books.
Loki
If there is one villain MCU fans can't seem to get enough of, it's Tom Hiddleston's Loki. Thankfully, 2021 brings about an entirely new Disney+ series revolving around him! After stealing the Tesseract in Endgame, and therefore altering the timeline, the God of Mischief is picked up by the Time Variance Authority.
Apparently, switching up the timeline is a huge no-no and something Loki has a knack for doing throughout the MCU. Going through time and altering history, this series is going to be full of fun mischief that only Loki knows how to cook up.
The Summer Olympics, Aka Toyko 2021
Skipping the 2020 Olympic Games this previous summer was a huge bummer to people all across the world. Thankfully, 2021 is looking up. After having an extra year to train and prepare, athletes are gearing up for one of the biggest sporting events, the Olympic Games.
This summer, NBC will once again air the event that takes place every four (well, five) years. From elite gymnasts to mile swimmers and even some new events such as surfing and skateboarding, Toyko 2021 is just the thing the world needs this summer.
Dopesick
The television adaptation of Beth Macy's non-fiction novel Dopesick: Dealers, Doctors and the Drug Company that Addicted America is heading to Hulu in 2021. Dopesick will illustrate the astounding pandemic sweeping across the United States, opioid addiction.
Developed by Danny Strong of Buffy the Vampire Slayer fame, this series has an all-star cast that will move viewers to tears. The cast includes Michael Keaton, Peter Sarsgaard, Kaitlyn Dever, Will Poulter, John Hoogenakker, and Rosario Dawson.
Foundation
Based on the Isaac Asimov sci-fi novel of the same name, Apple TV+ is bringing a new group of rebels to their streaming platform. The series revolves around a band of exiles who are making it their mission to save the Galactic Empire from total destruction.
Series creator David Goyer hopes to make the show into a huge epic, similar to Game of Thrones. In an interview with Lovin Malta, Goyer said, "now, with Foundation, we can hopefully [tell] the story over 80 episodes, or 80 hours, as opposed to trying to condense it down into a two or three-hour film."
The Gilded Age
Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes it at it again with the period drama series The Gilded Age. Similar to the England-based series, this new period piece is based in 1880s New York and follows the lives of some characters in the upper-class society after the baby boom years.
Of course, after the success of Downton Abbey, Fellowes wasn't going to bring just anyone into this upcoming series. The cast is top-notch, including Christine Baranski, Cynthia Nixon, Carrie Coon, and even Taissa Farmiga.
