The Queen Watches As Another Celebrity Joins The British Royal Family
It wasn't long ago that American actress Meghan Markle joined the British royal family, marrying Prince Harry and becoming the Duke and Duchess of Sussex together. And Meghan wasn't the first American celebrity to shake up the British royal family. King Edward VIII, Duke of Windsor and the late uncle to the Queen, abdicated the throne and his royal duties to marry American socialite Wallis Simpson in 1937. Now into her 68th year on the throne, is Queen Elizabeth ready to welcome yet another celebrity into the family during her reign? Things didn't go so smoothly last time...
Hanna Jaff Will Be The Newest Member Of The Royal Family
Whether or not the Queen is ready, a new member-- another non-British celebrity-- is set to join the royal family. Born in America and raised in Mexico, Hanna Jaff is a well-recognized reality TV personality and public figure in Mexico. She's currently engaged to Henry "Harry" Roper-Curzon, 22nd Baron Teynham, and descendent of King Charles II.
When the two are married, Hanna will officially become Lady Hanna, Baroness of Teynham. Their relationship hasn't been quiet, either. Like Meghan, Hanna has celebrity status and was a cast member of the Netflix series Made in Mexico.
He's "The Other Harry" of the Royal Family
Oddly enough, just like Meghan, Hanna is marrying a "Harry" of the British royal family. Some might forget there's another Harry in the family, other than Prince William's brother. Born Henry Roper-Curzon, a heir of the Baronage of Teynham, "Harry" also has red hair and is a British aristocrat.
The DailyMail reported that the couple met at an art exhibition and immediately hit it off. Only months after meeting, the couple became engaged after Harry popped the question in the Swiss Alps during Hanna's annual skiing trip.
How Will She Influence The Royal Family?
Hanna Jaff isn't a carbon copy of Meghan Markle by any means-- the two ladies have many differences. She is of Kurdish-Mexican descent, born in San Diego, and identifies as Mexican-American. In fact, Hanna even has some royal blood to claim.
Still, like Meghan, Hanna is very much considered to be an outsider to the British royal family-- she isn't well known in Britain and comes from another culture. Hanna will be bringing her Mexican-American influence to the Windsor family, whose traditions are deeply rooted in their own history.
She's A Descendant Of A Kurdish King And Wealthy Iraqis
Although much different from her future husband's lineage, Hanna Jaff also has ties to royalty. Hanna is a descendant of one of the great Kurdish kings, Mohamed Pasha Jaff, a supreme leader of the Jaff tribe.
Her family also includes the owners of the largest private bank in Iraq, North Bank, and Carlos Henry Bosdet, a prominent figure who was the first person in Mexico to install a telephone. Hanna's family has plenty of wealth to speak of.
Hanna Is Already Involved in Politics and Activism
Similar to Meghan, Hanna also has a background in activism and has spoken at three TEDx talks, the United Nations, and more than 80 universities in Mexico. In June 2013, she founded a nonprofit organization, the Jaff Foundation for Education, which teaches English to immigrants and refugees.
All of her work has led to many awards and honors, including being named one of the "10 Most Admired Women in Mexico" by Cosmopolitan and "30 Under 30" most successful Mexicans by Entrepreneur magazine. Hanna has quite a high profile in Mexico.
She's a Star in Mexico
Although you might not recognize her from British tabloids or even in popular U.S. magazines, Hanna is often rubbing shoulders with A-list stars, including Salma Hayek, Rita Ora, and Sabrina Elba. She also lives a rich-and-famous lifestyle.
In an interview with Sarah Scoop, Hanna describes her life that includes going skiing in the Swiss Alps every New Year and traveling around the world. Although she'd like the media to focus on her activism, there's no question that she's prominently known as a rich socialite in Mexico.
A Mutual Friend Introduced Them
Again, just like Meghan and Harry, Hanna and her Harry were also set-up by a mutual friend. Knowing that Harry was attracted to Latina women and passionate about philanthropy, she sensed they might hit it off. In the summer of 2019, the friend showed Harry a photo of Hanna, asking if he'd like to meet her. Taken away by her photo, he agreed.
At the time, Hanna was in Mexico, as the two of them don't live in the same country. This made the set-up a bit more difficult. Months later, they found a time to meet.
Hanna Flew to London to Meet Harry
Months after Harry was shown a photo of Hanna, their mutual friend was able to set-up a time and place for them to meet. It would be in London, at an art exhibition in the summer of 2019. There was an instant connection when they met, and they knew right away that it felt right.
Just four months later, while on a skiing trip in the Swiss Alps, Harry popped the question. Although they hadn't known each other for more than a year, it felt right. She said "yes".
Their Summer Wedding Plans Were Put On Hold
As quickly as they became engaged, the two planned to hold their wedding just months later. They set the date for July 2020, but due to COVID-19, they had to put their wedding plans on hold.
In an interview, Hanna admitted, "I was quite sad. But given the world is going through so much right now, there are bigger problems to worry about." It was less than one year since the two met, but they were more than ready to walk down the aisle.
They've Spent Months Apart Since Then
Not only were Hanna and Harry's wedding plans put on hold, but the couple was separated by the global pandemic. With Hanna in Mexico and Harry in England, lockdown orders forced the couple to stay apart for several months.
Although they weren't able to see each other in person, Hanna remarked that the time apart has brought them even closer together as a couple, as they longed for each other's company.
It's Helped Them Learn How To Communicate
When your significant other lives in another country, things become a little more complicated. With the distance between them for a good portion of their relationship, Hanna says that it's improved her and Harry's communication and has made their relationship stronger.
"The distance really does make the heart grow fonder," she said. "You realize that you have to be thankful for what you have every day... We've learned so much more about each other and ourselves."
Will She Eventually Leave Her Role, Too?
Nephew of Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, and cousin to Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, Harry's marriage won't fly under the radar. Although the engaged couple hasn't made as much of a splash as Harry and Meghan, the Queen and the rest of Great Britain will be keeping close watch on the couple and soon-to-be newest member of the British royal family.
And of course, everyone is anxious to learn where the couple decides to take up residence. Now that Harry and Meghan have set a precedent of young royals choosing to leave their royal duties behind to blaze their own trail, it's reasonable to believe the Queen is fearful of what the other royals might do.
Their Net Worth is Through the Roof
Although they descend from very different cultural backgrounds, both Harry and Hanna were born into rich aristocratic families and had a very privileged upbringing. Harry's net worth is an estimated $100 million while Hanna's is $50 million.
Hanna flaunted her money on the Netflix reality show Made in Mexico alongside other rich socialites who were raised there. Although she seeks to do good in the world with her non-profit organization, she's spent the majority of her time enjoying her wealth and choosing where to designate her family's massive fortune for philanthropy.
The Queen's Concerns Are Valid
Although Hanna Jaff has earned various degrees and awards, her young life has been one filled with leisure and luxury. Surely, she will be in over her head once she marries into the British royal family and becomes aware of all her new royal duties and the protocols she will be required to follow.
Just as Meghan did, it's likely that Hanna will have to give up her role in reality television, as well as her personal website and social media. That is, unless she and Harry decide to follow the path of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
No More Ripped Jeans
Getting together with a British prince is one thing, but marrying him is an entirely different kettle of fish. Prince Harry and Meghan's relationship was officially acknowledged in November of 2016 when Harry released a statement asking people to stop directing abuse at his new beau.
At this point, Meghan was still active on social media and could still wear what she wanted. Pictured here at the 2017 Invictus Games, Meghan wears a perfectly lovely pair of ripped jeans. Crop Tops Are An Absolute "No"
Like most young women, Meghan liked to dress the part – especially when attending fashion shows. In comparison to some of the A-list elite, Meg has always dressed relatively modestly. Even this black co-ord she wore to the Herve Leger show at New York's Fashion Week in 2014 was understated and elegant, but it still wouldn’t fly these days.
Why? That teeny tiny little bit of midriff on show is enough to send the Windsor house into a scandalous frenzy. This may be 2018, but a Duchess mustn’t show any skin you know, it’s strictly forbidden under Liz’s watchful eye.
Dark Nail Polish
You might think this one is a little bit ridiculous, but trust us, Her Majesty doesn't. When it comes to manicures, Queen Elizabeth II likes her family to keep it sophisticated and simple, meaning natural shades only.
Unfortunately for Meghan, that means she can kiss her favorite dusky grey and burgundy polish goodbye. Even if it matches the outfit, it’s a massive no-no and would get her in big trouble with her grandmother-in-law. Meg wore this dark grey shade in 2012 to the InStyle awards, matching a skin-tight silver dress. Both the nail polish and the dress have been banished from the Markle wardrobe indefinitely.
Sports Wear
Most of us have thrown on a pair of leggings and piled our hair into a scruffy bun to go about our every day business on the odd occasion, and it's likely that Meg was no different…but that was before she became Duchess of Sussex. These days, the duchess has to look perfect at all times.
Markle is pictured above taking part in a charity game with Serena Williams in 2014, but those days are long gone. Could you imagine the Duchess being photographed running errands in sports wear? It just wouldn’t do. The only running Meg has to do now is to the next regal event.
Open Shirts
Over the course of her career in the limelight, Meg has worn many smart shirts with a casual twist, usually pairing them with high-waisted jeans. Although unbuttoned shirts make for a good fashion statement, they're not accepted in the royal household.
Her Majesty is all about modesty and keeping up appearances, and if it wasn’t done in her day, then it certainly won’t be done in yours. Just look at the likes of Kate Middleton, have you ever seen her with a few buttons undone for the sake of style? The answer is no, and it’s not likely to happen any time soon.
Sheer Materials
In her Suits days, Meghan had to attend multiple events for the sake of promoting the show. Usually, she looked like she was having a blast getting glammed up and hitting the red carpet with her co-stars. With those days behind her, she can always look back at the photos and recall memories of killer outfits in the past.
Although this outfit is tame by modern standards, there's one thing that she won’t be doing again any time soon – the sheer blouse. Sheer materials won’t be able to sneak their way into the Duchess’ closet now, but it was nice while it lasted, wasn’t it Meg?
Bare Legs
You might think that royals have been wearing bare legs for eons now, but it's all an illusion designed to trick you! Or, more specifically, pantyhose. It’s a well-known rule that Ma’am expects her family to fall in line and cover up their legs in sheer stockings, but Meg went against it for her official engagement pictures.
Prior to becoming a Duchess, the actress often had her impressive pins out on display when she attended events, but it’s unlikely we’ll ever see them flaunted so proudly again given her change in circumstances. That luxury is saved exclusively for Prince Harry.
Plunging Necklines
Daring ensembles and the British royal family aren't exactly synonymous with each other. Unfortunately for Meghan, her days of plunging necklines are over. These days, it’s all about those sweetheart cuts. Just a few short years ago Meghan didn’t think twice about wearing an outfit like this.
Meghan’s style overhaul since her May nuptials has been largely aided by her sister-in-law, Kate. There’s even rumors that some of the same designers dress the pair, with the Duchess taking a leaf out of Kate’s book to get inspo on everything from shoes to hats and hairstyles. You can’t go too wrong with K-Mid’s solid guidance.
Sequins
We have to admit that this one may be a blessing rather than a curse. Sequins have their place, but if not done well can come off looking a little too Disco Dave for our liking. Meg hasn't rocked the look many times, but she did for one event a few years back.
When it comes to formal events now, Meghan is expected to go for a quietly sophisticated, stylish look – not something quite so in-your-face as all-over sequins. They might seem relatively harmless to you and I, but think about it – when have you ever seen a royal in sequins?
All Black
They say that black never goes out of style, and they're not wrong, but for royals, it’s a different story. "Generally it is thought that black is not usually worn unless in mourning, although Diana Princess of Wales did occasionally wear it for evening functions, and The Duchess of Cambridge has been known to do so," said an insider.
Meghan has also ignored the rule on a couple of occasions, so who knows – maybe Her Majesty is getting a little more lenient on this one particular past time in her old age. After all, Queen Victoria wore it for the majority of her life.
Costume Jewelry
When it comes to jewelry, there aren't really any hard and fast rules for the Royals to follow, but it goes without saying that big chunky bangles and statement pieces aren’t really favored. For everyday wear, Meghan would be expected to keep it simple, especially when it comes to bracelets and rings – not that she needs anything else with THAT wedding band.
Of course, royalty loves a little diamond here or there, so it’s not unusual for important events to come with a little sparkle, but these are 100% legit pieces that cost more than our houses, and not the kind you find at the mall.
Brightly Colored Outfits
When it comes to bright outfits, Meg usually pushes them to one side in favor of the usual darker hues, but she has been known to go for a pop of color every now and then. Eagle-eyed fans will notice that her color palette has changed since tying the knot.
From beige to pastels, the Duchess keeps it neutral most of the time, although she has been spotted wearing an electric blue dress to an event with her hubby. It's unlikely that you’ll ever see her wearing bright colors while attending the same event as the Queen though, as it’s an unspoken rule that Her Majesty needs to be the most eye-catching.
Short Skirts
With legs as good as Meghan's, it’s no wonder that the brunette beauty had the confidence to walk the red carpet in skirts dangerously short. Pictured here in 2012, 32-year-old Meg wouldn’t have had a clue what life had in store for her and her beloved clothes.
Wearing a skirt this short just wouldn’t happen now. There’s no way Meghan would even attempt to leave Nottingham Cottage in a getup like this, let alone the grounds of Kensington Palace. Luckily for her, she looks gorgeous in whatever outfit she wears, regardless of the length of it. Not that we’re jealous…
Off-The-Shoulder Is Off Limits
Prior to May 19 2018, Meghan used to rock off the shoulder or strapless dresses all the time. It was probably one of her staple looks, as she showed up to numerous events with her collarbone on show. We don't blame her, the style suited her athletic frame down to a T, but you probably know where this is heading.
Yes, it’s not Victorian times and no one shudders at the sight of a woman’s ankle anymore, but a little flash of the flesh is too much for Her Majesty, who prefers women to demurely keep them out of sight.
Branded Clothing
We've touched on sportswear already, but there’s another element to this that we haven’t discussed. Members of the royal family have to remain completely impartial to absolutely anything. They can’t even vote. When it comes to their clothing, it’s much the same. You won’t ever see a royal rocking a Nike sweatshirt and there absolutely won’t be any sponsored jerseys like Meg is wearing above.
It’s up to them to be completely neutral for the sake of Queen and country, which is probably a little annoying if you’ve spent years compiling a solid wardrobe of branded gym wear and the like.
Five-Inch Pumps
Meg has been a fan of Christian Louboutin and his famous red bottoms since she first started walking the red carpet. Some of her choices have been towering heels that even the best of us would struggle to walk in. It's not forbidden for royals to wear pumps, but Meg will have to watch the style of them moving forward.
Everything from the height to the material needs to be in line with the new wardrobe guidelines. In short, we’re thinking less Dita von Teese and more von Trapp. Plus, meeting legions of adoring subjects is a little difficult tottering around in five inchers.
Gaudy Patterns
Wearing a pattern can be a daring choice for any Hollywood-ite to take. There are all sorts to think about, for starters, will it clash with the red carpet backdrop? Will the design translate in pictures well? Meg hasn't ventured too much into this particular fashion niche in the past, and she isn’t likely to again.
When it comes to being a Duchess, less is certainly more. In-your-face geometric patterns like Meg is wearing in this 2013 snap won’t be high up on the agenda. It’s simply too much for a distinguished royal to present. If it’s not plain, then it’s not worth it!
Draped Jackets
We've all got our fashion habits, and some of them die really hard. The Duchess formerly known as Rachel in Suits is no different, having worn a jacket draped over her shoulders several times in the public eye. What can possibly be wrong with this fashion choice, you ask?
Traditionally, no female member of the royal family is permitted to take her jacket off (wholly or partially) in public as it’s deemed "unladylike". So, the likes of Kate and Meg have to follow the Queen’s example and keep a coat on no matter the temperature. Of course, they’re quite savvy with this and wear light materials in the summer months.
The Engagement Rings
The engagement ring that Prince William presented to Kate Middleton once belonged to William's late mother, Princess Diana. Now valued at $400,000, the 12-carat ring features an oval blue sapphire with cut faces. It's circled by stunning solitaire diamonds.
Meghan's engagement ring also features jewels from Princess Diana's collection, with two of her diamonds framing a center stone that Prince Harry purchased from Botswana, where the now-married couple first fell in love. Meghan's engagement ring is worth an estimated $350,000.
Kate Is An Authentic Brit
While there were, of course, some critics of Kate Middleton when it was announced that she was dating Prince William, the couple seemed to be a perfect fit. Kate grew up in a wealthy family in Berkshire, England and followed a proper path of education, attending St. Andrew's School, Downe House School, Marlborough College, and the University of St Andrews, where she met her future husband.
Kate's family has plenty of elite social ties; her father was born into wealth and also has ties to the British aristocracy, making it likely that Kate and William would meet.
Meghan's LA Background
While Kate was born into wealth and set on a path of proper education and finding a suitor, Meghan took an interest in acting and pursued her career. She attended an all-girls Catholic private school in Los Angeles and went on to double major is theater and international studies at Northwestern University.
Meghan's father worked in television, as a director of photography and lighting, while her mother was a social worker and yoga instructor.
Waving To The Crowd
Upon officially joining the British royal family, Duchesses Kate and Meghan are expected to demonstrate the perfect regal wave. After the wedding ceremony, royal brides are expected to wave to the crowds during the carriage ride, as a sign of appreciation for the people that have gathered to celebrate.
Kate keeps her fingers close together for her wave, while Meghan has her fingers a bit more relaxed and spaced out. Both ladies use minimal movement while waving to the crowds.
Prince Charles' Two Outfits
While Prince Charles' second wife Camilla Parker wore similar outfits to both royal weddings, the father of Prince William and Prince Harry wore noticeably different attire for two of the biggest days in his sons' lives.
For Prince William and Kate's wedding, Charles donned his royal uniform, complete with all its regalia. For Prince Harry and Meghan's wedding, Prince Charles wore a simple grey suit that paired well with Camilla's light pink dress and hat.
Walking Down The Aisle
It's hard to fathom the amount of pressure on Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle as they each walked down the aisle on their big days with the entire world watching. The Duchess of Cambridge was accompanied by her father, Michael Middleton, on her big day.
Unfortunately, the Duchess of Sussex's father was experiencing health issues during the month of her wedding date, preventing him from traveling to London for the big event. Meghan walked down the aisle solo before being met by Prince Charles halfway.
The Two Wedding Reception Dresses
After their royal weddings, each Duchess changed dresses and headed to the wedding reception that Prince Charles organized for each of his sons and their new wives. Kate wore a classic white Alexander McQueen dress for her reception.
Meghan's dress was designed by Stella McCartney and cost a reported $157,000. She was spotted wearing the stunning gown as she held hands with Prince Harry while he helped her into a blue vintage Jaguar.
The Kiss
Millions of viewers tuned in to witness the first kiss of the newlywed royal couples. Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge had their first kiss on the balcony of Buckingham Palace after the wedding ceremony at Westminister Abbey.
Prince Harry and the Duchess of Sussex displayed their first wedded kiss right outside of St. George's Chapel following the wedding ceremony. Both couples beamed with happiness as the crowds cheered them on.
The Middletons' Attire For Both Weddings
Michael and Carole Middleton, the parents of Kate, are elite members of British society. The family has a long history of prominent lawyers and are very well-educated. They're no strangers to the British royals, as the two families have shared ties for quite a number of years.
For their daughter's royal wedding, Michael donned a suit and top hat, while the Mother of the Bride wore a light blue dress. Both wore similar outfits when they attended Prince Harry and Meghan's wedding in 2018.
The Two Tiaras
Nothing about a royal wedding is average, which is part of why so many people tune in to watch. One aspect that sets royal weddings apart from the rest is the incredible headwear that the brides don for the event.
At her wedding, Kate wore a Cartier tiara that was given to Queen Elizabeth II on her 18th birthday. Meghan also wore a tiara that belonged to the Queen. The Diamond Bandeau Tiara was designed in 1932. For her wedding day, Meghan swapped the sapphire center stone for a diamond.
The Beckhams
Star soccer player David Beckham and his wife, fashion designer and former pop star Victoria Beckham, attended both royal weddings. David wore a grey morning suit and top hat for Prince William and Kate's wedding while Victoria wore a sleek navy dress and hat.
For Prince Harry and Meghan's wedding, the couple wore similar colors with David sporting a close haircut and beard instead of a top hat. The famous couple reportedly donated their outfits from the wedding to raise money for charity.
The Royal Wedding Cakes
Prince William and Kate's wedding cake was made by Fiona Cairns and featured an incredible eight tiers. The couple selected fruitcake as their flavor and had a second cake made that was chocolate, for guests who didn't like fruitcake, costing a total of $160,000.
Prince Harry and Meghan opted for a lemon sponge cake with elderflower syrup and Amalfi lemon curd for their big day. Made by Claire Ptak, the cake reportedly cost between $60,000 and $75,000.
A Closer Look At The Beautiful Bouquets
The wedding bouquets that Kate and Meghan held at their respective weddings look quite similar but have important differences between the two. Middleton's delicately small bouquet was designed by Shane Connolly and features all-white flowers, each representing something that the couple wishes for their marriage, including happiness and steady love.
Designed by Philippa Craddock, Meghan's bouquet included flowers that were handpicked by Prince Harry and symbolized hopes for their marriage, including dedication and love.
Kate Had A Maid Of Honor, Meghan Had Page Boys
As expected, Kate Middleton asked her younger sister Pippa to act as her Maid of Honor and carry her train down the aisle at Westminster Abbey. The two sisters are very close and lived together before Kate's wedding day.
On the other hand, Meghan didn't select a Maid of Honor, although she had several of her best friends in attendance at her royal wedding. Two page boys carried the train of Meghan's dress at St. George's Chapel.
The Grooms
Both Prince William and Prince Harry served in the military and wore their uniforms on their wedding days, as it's tradition for royal grooms to marry in military dress. William, a Colonel, wore a red Irish Guards uniform. He was the first royal groom to wear red since Captain Mark Phillips in 1973.
Prince Harry wore a Blues and Royals military uniform on his wedding day. He opted to wear a Major's uniform, even though he was appointed as Captain General of the Royal Marines.
Duchess Catherine Of Cambridge's Dress
The world waited with bated breath to see what dress Kate Middleton would wear as she married the future King. The Duchess of Cambridge selected a gown designed by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen. The dress was widely popular as viewers noted the blend of tradition and modern elegance, costing a reported $450,000.
Kate's dress featured lace that was handcrafted by the Royal School of Needlework and a nine-foot train. The back of the dress was extremely detailed with no less than 58 organza-covered buttons and Rouleau loops.
Some Thought Kate Wore White To Meghan's Wedding
Traditionally, no one except the bride is supposed to wear white to a wedding. However, at first glance, many thought that the Duchess of Cambridge bent the rules on this one. Looking closer in different lighting, however, Kate's elegant Alexander McQueen coat was a primrose yellow.
Having just given birth to Prince Louis three weeks prior, Kate looked stunning, pairing the stylish light yellow coat with a Philip Treacy hat.
The Duchess Of Sussex's Wedding Dress
Designed by Clare Waight Keller of Givenchy, the Duchess of Sussex wore a silk dress on her wedding day. The dress featured an open boat neckline with an otherwise simple design, free of lace or any other embellishments.
The Duchess did incorporate a piece of fabric from her blue dress that she wore on her first date with Prince Harry. Although her train was modest, Meghan's veil was an incredible 16.5 feet long.
The Mother Of The Bride
Carole Middleton didn't want to take the shine away from her daughter, the Duchess of Cambridge, on her big day. Her pale blue dress, designed by Catherine Walker, was the perfect shade for the spring wedding. The Mother of the Bride looked elated on Kate's big day.
Meghan's mother Doria Ragland flew in from Los Angeles to show her support for Prince Harry and Meghan's royal wedding. She wore a light green Oscar de la Renta dress, looking happy as ever as Meghan married her prince charming.
Not Everyone Was Invited To The Evening Wedding Receptions
Following each royal wedding is the evening reception. Not everyone who attends the grandiose weddings is invited to attend the evening receptions. Most guests changed outfits after the wedding for the magical night, which wasn't shared publicly.
Prince William and Kate Middleton held their evening reception at Buckingham Palace, while Prince Harry and Meghan held their reception at St. George's Hall in Windsor Castle. Both events followed tradition with speeches, toasts, and well wishes to the newly-wed couples.
The Price Tag Of Each Wedding
