Summer 2021: Highly-Anticipated Series Coming To Streaming Services
The summer of 2021: aka the season where streaming services are releasing some of the most highly-anticipated series of the year. From Loki and What If...? dropping on Disney+ to the must-watch Starz series Heels and Blindspotting, there will be no shortage of content to watch after a long day.
Ted Lasso - Season 2
Gold Globe-winner Jason Sudeikis is back and funnier than ever in the second season of the award-winning Apple TV+ series Ted Lasso. In season two, it's back to England to watch AFC Richmond compete in the Championship.
But, aside from that little plot point, the cast and crew have been very vague about what viewers are to expect this upcoming season. All there is to know is that belly laughs will be abundant.
Sweet Tooth
Gus is ready to tell his story, one of adventure, friends, and the meaning of home, in the Netflix original series Sweet Tooth. After the "The Great Crumble," newborns weren't normal; they were part human and part animal.
Humans fear them, hunting the hybrids down. But that isn't enough to stop Gus, a human-deer hybrid, from journeying outside of his forest home to search for the meaning of his origins.
Monsters At Work
Pixar is giving the people what they want with the July Disney+ release of Monsters at Work. Set after the events of Monsters Inc, the workplace comedy will follow Mike and Sully as they introduce the harvesting of children's laughter instead of their screams.
With all of the sarcasm and laughter the movie is known for, the series will be full of family fun. It's going to be a series kids and adults alike will enjoy watching.
Love, Victor - Season 2
Fans will finally get Victor's parents' reaction to him coming out in June of 2021. The first season of the hit series ended on a cliffhanger, but the upcoming second season is going to be well worth the wait.
After coming out to his parents, Victor has a great summer. Now, it's back to school with his boyfriend, Benji. The only problem is, how is everyone going to act when he finally comes out publicly?
Gossip Girl
It's time to travel back to the Upper East Side in Gossip Girl. With an entirely new cast portraying Manhattan's elite, the series is going to give viewers a summer full of scandalous drama.
Discussing the series, producer Joshua Safran said, "Gossip Girl still has the twists and the turns, and all the sad tragedies and great uplifting moments." Fun fact: Kristen Bell will revive her voice-over role of the infamous "gossip girl."
Heels
In August, Starz is bringing viewers into the ring with Heels. The series revolves around Ace and Jack Spade, two brothers who clash in and outside of the wrestling ring. With neither wanting to work a typical 9-5 job, they fight to secure the rights to their father's legacy, a wrestling promotion business, while making a name for themselves in small-town Georgia.
With Viking's Alexander Ludwig and Arrow's Stephen Amell starring as Jack and Ace, the action shots are sure to be spectacular.
The Good Fight - Season 5
Fans of The Good Fight will be excited to learn that season five is making its way to Paramount+ in June of 2021. At the end of the fourth season, viewers were left with more questions than answers, namely what's going to happen to their favorite characters now that Reddick, Boseman & Lockhart's founding partner's name was run through the mud, and they lost their most reputed client.
What's going to happen now? Only watching the new season will tell!
Loki
After Loki's little escape with the Tesseract during Avengers: Endgame, MCU fans are finally going to learn what happened to the God of Mischief. This summer, Loki will be released on Disney+, and viewers are going to be introduced to the Time Variance Authority, aka the organization that arrests Loki for disrupting the timeline.
Well, "arrests" is a strong word. It's more like they blackmail him into helping them fix everything he messed up after the events of Endgame. It's sure to be a wild ride.
Turner & Hooch
Josh Pecks stars in the Disney+ series Turner & Hooch, dropping to Disney+ on July 16, 2021. The series is pretty much a fast-forward from the original comedy. This time, it follows the story of the original Turner's son, U.S. Marshal Scott Turner.
Like his father, Scott Turner wants nothing to do with his slobbery sidekick, the loveable Hooch. But through adventures, they become best friends. It's going to be one of the feel-good series of the summer.
Riverdale - Season 5B
The second half of Riverdale season five is on its way to The CW this summer. After a time-leap, bringing the teenagers of the crime-riddled town into their 20s, the series is more absurd and drama-filled than ever.
While the actual plot has been kept under wraps, fans can expect the story to continue to explore Hiram Lodge's plan to destroy the town and Jughead's lengthy exploration to prove the Mothman conspiracy.
Blindspotting
Set after the events of the 2018 film of the same name, the Starz series Blindspotting will follow the story of Ashley after her husband Miles is imprisoned. After his incarceration, Ashley and their son move in with her mother-in-law and sister-in-law.
The series is all about what a person will do when they are faced with seemingly impossible decisions. A mixture of both drama and comedy, Blindspotting is one of those shows that isn't going to skirt around the truth of everyday life.
Schmigadoon!
A nod to the Broadway star whose careers were put on hold during the 2020 lockdown, Schmigadoon! is one series that will put a smile on theater lovers' faces. Set to air on Apple TV+, the series follows a couple who gets stuck in the fictional town of Schmigadoon, a town that's been plucked straight out of a classic musical.
And with Broadway legends such as Kristin Chenoweth and Aaron Tveit as part of the cast, the series is sure to have amazing musical numbers.
What If...?
The MCU jumps into the animated world with the Disney+ series What If...? Taking major events from the various movies throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the series asks a major question -- what if this happened instead of that?
For example, what if Peggy Carter became Captain Britain, or what if Steve Rogers was a zombie? The series is going to showcase questions fans didn't know needed to be answered, and it's bound to be marvelous.
Masters Of The Universe: Revelation
Set after the events of the iconic 80s cartoon and following the story of Prince Adam, Masters of the Universe: Revelation is an animated series people aren't going to want to miss out on watching this summer. Set to premiere on Netflix in July, this series isn't a typical Saturday morning cartoon.
According to series developer Kevin Smith, "We use these characters that most people consider action figures to tell insanely human stories set in a very inhuman world."
Panic
Based on Lauren Oliver's young adult novel of the same name, this summer, viewers are going to be transported to a small Texas town in the Amazon Prime Video series Panic. Teenagers don't really think of consequences to their actions, especially this group of recently graduated seniors who want to make their last summer together one they'll never forget.
Facing off in a high-stakes competition for some money and the chance at a better life, these kids really don't know what they're in for...and neither does the audience.
Mr. Corman
In a story based on his real-life, Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays the fictional Mr. Corman, a music teacher whose dreams of being a professional performer don't exactly pan out. While he loves his job as a teacher, Corman just broke up with his fiancée, moved in with a high school friend, and is struggling as an artist.
The Apple TV+ comedy-drama is sure to be one of the biggest hits of the summer, so subscribers will not want to miss out.
Lisey's Story
For fans of psychological thriller author Stephen King, Lisey's Story should be at the top of your must-watch list. Based on the King novel of the same name, the drama follows Lisey London as she begins to remember repressed memories and disturbing events of her late husband, Scott.
According to star Julianne Moore, "there's so much in it — psychological horror, romance, mystery, a science-fiction-like quality, sort of scary brutality — sometimes I was like, holy cow, what now?"
Hit & Run
Netflix subscribers are going to have no shortage of mystery, suspense, or drama with the original series Hit & Run. After a happily married man, Segev gets news that his wife was killed in a hit & run accident, he goes on a whirlwind hunt to find the person responsible.
Teaming up with his ex, Segev soon learns that everything he thought he knew about his wife was a lie and that there is way more to her than he ever thought possible.
Stargirl - Season 2
Season one of Stargirl left off on a slew of cliffhangers, so fans will be excited to learn that the Arrowverse series will be coming back for a second season this summer on The CW. While the upcoming season's plot hasn't been released, fans can expect some of their questions to be answered.
Some of the events that will be explored include Yolanda killing Brainwave, Solomon Grundy escaping the ISA, and Starman's unexpected return.
American Rust
Based on Philipp Meyer's debut novel of the same name, American Rust stars Jeff Daniels as chief of police Del Harris in the small town Rust Belt town of Buell, Pennsylvania. The series follows Harris as he navigates through the dilapidated town as it faces economic failure.
And, to make matters worse, his girlfriend's son is arrested for murder. It's never a dull moment in Buell, and viewers aren't going to want to miss a second of the drama.
