Here’s A Sneak Peak At The Pokémon We Know Will Be In “Detective Pikachu”
There are more than 800 Pokémon over eight generations, but the most iconic one is still Pikachu. The perfectly adorable yellow rodent is so popular that it's now the star of an upcoming feature film, Pokémon: Detective Pikachu.
With so many characters in the Pokédex, Pokémon fans are anxiously waiting to see how many of them will be a part of the film. Here is every Pokémon confirmed to make some sort of appearance in the movie, and yes, they're all as terrifying and realistic as you're imagining.
Psyduck Is Looking Surprisingly Calm, Cool, And Collected
Psyduck is a Water-type Pokémon with unique psychic abilities. It is usually freaking out because its psychic powers leave it with a constant, painful headache. When the headache is too great, it will lash out at everyone in the area.
The Psyduck we see in Detective Pikachu looks calm, cool, and collected in comparison. It is even stable enough to help out as a personal assistant to reporter Lucy Stevens. Hopefully, its headache has gone away.
Charizard Is Ready To Rumble
Our first look at Charizard is just as terrifying as we expected. Like Pikachu, Charizard is one of Pokémon's most iconic characters and even appeared on the box for "Pokémon Red." It is a Fire/Flying-type Pokémon that is the final evolved form of Charmander.
In the movie, Charizard appears as a terrifying dragon fighting in some sort of rumble ring. It is owned by a trainer named Sebastian that is one of the most feared in Ryme City.
Mewtwo Looks Ready To Reprise His Role As A Villain
Mewtwo is the most powerful creature in the original Red and Blue Pokémon games. Mewtwo is a one of a kind Psychic-type Pokémon that is a genetically modified version of Mew. Thanks to its powers, Mewtwo is a fan favorite who often ends up playing the villain. Even in its appearance in Nintendo's "Super Smash Bros." game, Mewtwo is one of the most powerful.
From the looks of it, Mewtwo will reprise its role as the villain in Detective Pikachu.
Snubbull Is A Secret Sweetheart
Snubbull is a Fairy-type Pokémon that is much sweeter than it appears. Snubbull might look like a bulldog that is ready to bite your head off but it has a really playful personality. Introduced in Generation II, Snubbull definitely has more bark than bite.
In the movie, Snubbull appears to be working as part of the police department. It's likely that Snubbull and Detective Pikachu will work closely together to end crime in Ryme City.
Jigglypuff Looks To Be Right In Their Element
Pokémon fans know that even though Jigglypuff looks sweet and fuzzy, the diva can be a fierce competitor. Jigglypuff is a Normal/Fairy-type Pokémon that will sing anyone within earshot to sleep with its voice. With those powers, it's only fitting that our first glimpse of Jigglypuff has them standing over a passed out patron.
Watch out though, Jigglypuff is also known for playing pranks and leaving marks on the faces of its passed-out victims.
Mr. Mime Is Even Creepier In Live-Action
Mr. Mime is a Psychic/Fairy-type Pokémon with one of the strangest appearances in the Pokédex. Its humanoid appearance has long been criticized as being terrifying and the movie managed to make it even creepier. Mr. Mime isn't like any other Pokémon because it is a surprisingly powerful pantomime artist.
As Mr. Mime becomes more powerful, it gains the ability to use particles to create invisible walls and barriers to stop enemies. How do we put up a visible wall in front of Mr. Mime so we don't have to see it?
Lickitung's Tongue Is Out In Full Force
Lickitung is one of the original 151 Pokémon and is a Normal-type that relies on its tongue for just about everything. Its tongue is enormous and said to actually be twice as long as its body. The tongue acts as both a sensing organ and a weapon, depending on what it needs.
Creating a live-action Lickitung could have been either really successful or really terrifying. Somehow, Detective Pikachu has managed to make Lickitung look cute instead of creepy.
A Herd Of Bulbasaurs Are Ready To Help Pikachu
It wouldn't be a Pokémon movie without featuring the first Pokémon in the Pokédex: Bulbasaur. The Grass-type character is one of the most beloved by fans because it is one of the starter Pokémon in the original Red and Blue games.
It seems that Bulbasaur will stay true to itself in the film and spend most of the time grazing in their peaceful, natural habitat and generally staying out of conflict. Also, note the Morelull floating around the Bulbasaurs.
Of Course, Pikachu Is The Cutest Thing In Existence
Considering the fact that the movie is named after Pikachu, it makes sense why we'll see the little guy in a big way. While Pikachu is normally a pretty simple character with extraordinary powers, Detective Pikachu will feature a different side of him.
In the movie, he appears to be quite intelligent, can speak English, and is dealing with a case of faulty powers. The best thing to expect from Pikachu is that he's voiced by Ryan Reynolds.
Aipom Has Never Looked So Vicious
Aipom is a Normal-type Pokémon that resembles a tiny monkey. If it didn't have purple fuzzy fur, it could pass as a monkey no problem. Aipom has a three-fingered tail that gives it more agility than a normal monkey and comes in handy since it lives its life in the trees.
Aipom is almost always smiling so it's shocking to see it looking so vicious. Maybe it is trading in its mischievous ways for a more aggressive form of fighting.
Loudred Is Accompanied By Diplo
Yes, your eyes haven't tricked you. That is indeed the real-life famous DJ Diplo laying down a beat as a Loudred acts as his speaker. Loudred is a Normal-type Pokémon with an oversized mouth and ears. They allow Loudred to inhale and exhale enormous amounts of air that can be used to destroy things.
It seems like Loudred is not being used to its destructive abilities and instead is simply used as a loudspeaker for DJs. Justice for Loudred!
Squirtle Seems To Be Trapped In A Cage
Squirtle is a Water-type Pokémon who is one of the three starters from the original game. Squirtle is beloved by fans, but its water-shooting abilities are primitive in comparison to its evolved forms.
In the film, Squirtle appears to be trapped in a cage awaiting its turn in the ring. There's no telling whether this Squirtle is an original one or part of the Squirtle Squad–a gang of rogue Squirtles who have forgone their masters.
Something Seems Off About Flareon
Flareon is a Fire-type Pokémon in the same category as Charizard. It is one of the eight evolutions of Eevee, who is an original Pokémon. Other evolutions of Eevee include Jolteon, Vaporeon, and Umbreon.
In the film, Flareon is standing on a desk surrounded by a blue glow which wouldn't come from a normal evolution. Something strange is going on in Ryme City that might be making Pokémon evolve in different forms than usual.
Golurk Is Standing Strong
Golurk is the 623rd Pokémon and is a Ground/Ghost-type. It does not evolve and was created by an ancient civilization to serve as a guardian for Pokémon. The creators actually modeled Golurk on the ancient Jewish folklore of the Golem of Prague.
Golurk is extremely powerful and looks like a massive, walking suit of armor. With strength comes danger though, and the seal on Golurk's chest is meant to make sure Golurk doesn't lose control of its power.
Machamp's Skills Aren't Being Put To Use
Machamp is a Fighting-type Pokémon that is, in the simplest terms, completely jacked. Machamp is the final evolved form of Machop and part of that evolution included some serious muscle mass. All that muscle plus its four arms means it is an impressive fighter.
It seems that Machamp's abilities are being underused though. Instead of using its four arms for combat, Machamp is using its four arms to direct traffic around a Snorlax sleeping in the street.
Treecko And Charmander Are Also Part Of The Cage Fight
Behind the cage, you can see both Charmander and Treecko waiting anxiously to see if they'll be sent next into the cage to fight. Charmander is a Fire-type Pokémon that is the original form of Charizard. It's probably hoping they don't have to face each other in the cage.
Treecko is a Grass-type Pokémon with sharp claws that make it an expert climber. Treecko might seem small, but it's also one of only three starters in Ruby and Sapphire Pokémon, so you know it's tough.
Greninjas Are Showing Off Their Moves
Despite its ninja name, Greninja is not a Fighting-type Pokémon. Instead, Greninja is a Water/Dark-type that is the final evolution of Froakie. This Pokémon is quick, agile, and able to jump to incredibly high heights.
In the film, we see a group of them chasing and attacking Pikachu using a high jump and by slashing their long, slimy fingers. If you look even closer, you'll notice how they travel in packs and that their scarf is actually a long tongue.
Gengar Has A Cheshire Cat Grin
Gengar is a Ghost/Poison-type Pokémon that is known for being one of the most powerful creatures in the original game. Gengar evolves from Haunter, and is the final form of Gastly. Its powers are so strong that it can even Mega Evolve into Mega Gengar.
In Detective Pikachu, Gengar appears to be another Pokémon left to battle in the ring and it is fighting in a pack. This is probably the last Pokémon you want to go up against.
We See You Back There, Emolga
Emolga is an Electric/Flying-type Pokémon that can be seen hiding in the back clustered together on top of a food stall of this Detective Pikachu scene. It appears similar to a flying squirrel and can glide through the air to attack from above. Emolga will use its electric capabilities to shock its target from above.
While the sky squirrel doesn't seem to be disrupting much, Pikachu might be looking for some help to regain his electric powers.
Joltiks Are Seen Scurrying Around Everywhere
Joltik is a Bug/Electric-type of Pokémon that is actually one of the smallest in the Pokédex. A Joltik can't make their own electricity because they're so small, so they have to make a home on another, larger Pokémon. That's why you'll see them scurrying around from Pokémon to Pokémon.
In Detective Pikachu, Joltiks are seen crawling nearly everywhere — including on the wires as seen here — and even in the major marketplaces looking for some electricity to steal.
