2010s Movies That Aren’t Worth A Watch
The 2010s brought us some of the best and worst movies in recent cinematic history. Everything from the Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise to Abraham Lincoln slaying vampires has graced the big screen. While some of these movies found major success, others fell flat because of lackluster plotlines.
Filmmakers, just remember that releasing a film in 3D doesn't mean it is going to be good.
Dirty Grandpa Was Anything But Funny
Even though critically acclaimed actor Robert De Niro was a star in Dirty Grandpa, he didn't help make the film enjoyable. The film used elementary gross-out humor to get through an otherwise weird plot.
Mike Ryan of Uproxx even went as far as saying, "Dirty Grandpa is the worst movies I've ever seen in a movie theater. Burn it." Although we don't agree on burning "art," we have to admit that there was no reason for Dirty Grandpa ever to be filmed.
Texas Chainsaw 3D (At Least It Was 3D?)
On paper, the sequel to the 1974 film Texas Chain Saw Massacre seems like it would be a good idea. Texas Chainsaw 3D ignored all the events in previous installments, moving forward from where the old movie left off. Unfortunately, the attempt to make the main murderous villain an anti-hero fell flat.
Critics on Rotten Tomatoes say that the movie was "an ugly and cynical attempt to rebrand Leatherface as horror anti-hero, Texas Chainsaw 3D is a bold move for the franchise."
The Emoji Movie Shouldn't Have Happened
Where to start with this one. The Emoji Movie is something that should never have happened. Even though the film enlisted some top voices, such as Anna Faris, Christina Aguilera, and Patrick Stewart, it received "near-universal disdain from critics and audiences." Apparently the adventures in Textopolis were not thought through, and director Tony Leondis' Toy Story inspiration fell flat.
Alonso Duralde of The Wrap calls the film, "a soul-crushing disaster because it lacks humor, wit, ideas, visual style, compelling performances, a point of view or any other distinguishing characteristic that would make it anything but a complete waste of your time." Well, there you have it, folks.
The Studio Should Have Stopped After Fifty Shades of Grey
Fifty Shades of Grey is based on a book by E.L James. While the book itself has less than stellar reviews, one would think that if a film was going to be made, scripts would be tweaked and there would be a bit more creativity. Alas, audiences received nothing more than an emotionally abusive relationship between Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele and an absurd plot.
Claudia Puig of USA Today says, "the dialogue is laughable, the pacing is sluggish and the performances are one-note." The good news is that the studio thought it was a good idea to finish off the trilogy. Sigh.
The Last Airbender Was A Letdown For Many
For fans of the animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender, the film adaption was a complete letdown. The film is sometimes considered to be the worst movie ever made, winning a Golden Raspberry Award in 2010 for Worst Picture. Since the writers had a complete animated series to work off of, it's amazing that a film could be so void of a plot.
The horrible acting and "bending" CGI didn't help its overall "appeal," either. They didn't even pronounce the main character's name correctly! Critics wonder how, after a series of flops, director M. Night Shyamalan was hired to be part of such a high profile movie.
Vampires Suck Really Did Suck
Vampires Suck is meant to be a parody movie of Twilight, but it is so utterly ridiculous that most people found it humorless. Even though it's meant to be a joke, this film takes it a bit too far -- for example, a group of vampires is mistaken for the Black Eyed Peas and Becca's mother has an affair with Tiger Woods (insert eye-roll here).
Critic Jake Horowitz says, "no amount of review can make up for what I witnessed while watching Vampires Suck. How wrong I was to assume that it was even watchable." How this film made $80 million worldwide will forever be a mystery.
Critics Wonder How Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son Was Approved
Many critics are uncertain how Big Momma was able to get so many installments. Not surprising, considering Martin Lawrence's FBI agent character, Malcolm Turner, gives the audience much of the same in each film. There is only so much audiences can take of an FBI agent in a fat-suit who is dressed as a woman. At least give viewers some new jokes to work with!
The film received a solid five percent on Rotten Tomatoes, with the site's critics saying that the film was "unnecessary, unfunny, and generally unwelcome, Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son offers more of the same for fans of Martin Lawrence's perplexingly popular series."
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter Was Quite A Concept
If you're like us then you're very interested to meet the people who thought doing an Abraham Lincoln vampire crossover movie was a good idea. Apparently nothing says Commander in Chief quite like slaying vampires for revenge. Emanuel Levy of EmanuelLevy.com said that "Though original, this is a strenuous effort to combine the conventions of two genres."
Although some people enjoyed Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter for its silly concept and visual effects, the movie didn't garner the best reception from critics. The biggest complaint about the movie was that the filmmakers took a fun concept and made it way too serious.
Getaway Missed The Mark In 2013
For a film with stars such as Ethan Hawke and Selena Gomez, one would think Getaway would be okay. Seems as though audience members didn't enjoy the police chase/heist plotline that was being controlled by someone called 'The Voice.'
If you haven't seen the film, maybe the two percent on Rotten Tomatoes will deter your curiosity. Critics say that the film is "monotonously fast-paced to the point of exhaustion, Getaway offers a reminder of the dangers in attempting to speed past coherent editing, character development, sensible dialogue, and an interesting plot."
For An Action Movie, The Legend Of Hercules Was Dull
The Legend Of Hercules was one of two Hollywood attempts at the mythology surrounding demigod Hercules. Unfortunately for "The Legend," the plot was boring and didn't hold audiences' attention.
Critics said that the movie is "Cheap-looking, poorly acted, and dull, The Legend of Hercules is neither fun enough to qualify as an action movie nor absorbing enough to work on a dramatic level." Let's hope that the phrase "third times a charm" holds true if anyone plans on doing another Hercules movie.
This Means War Was A Career Low For The Three Stars
We're all about girl power, but Reese Witherspoon's character took it too far in the film This Means War. Her character is dating two separate men, who just happen to be best friends and, wait for it, they're also super spies. The fact that Chris Pine and Tom Hardy play the two men makes one think that the movie, aside from the cheating, has potential. Nope.
Critics on Rotten Tomatoes say that the film was "A career lowlight for all three of its likable stars, This Means War is loud, clumsily edited, and neither romantic nor funny." Pretty much, all the film had to go for it was the actors.
Katherine Heigl and Ashton Kutcher Couldn't Save Killers
Killers was a 2010 film that played out like your typical rom-com plot: girl meets the guy of her dreams, they fall in love, marry, and then plot twist - the guy is actually a lethal assassin and his wife's father is the one who put a bounty on his head. The film was not well received, being called ridiculous, and won Ashton Kutcher a Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Actor.
Critic S. Jhoanna Robledo says it best: "The biggest mystery here is not how two perfectly appealing stars -- [Katherine] Heigl and [Ashton] Kutcher -- could have so little chemistry, but how a movie loaded with fast-paced sequences could be so tiresome."
Clash Of The Titans Fell Flat
It's unfortunate that with actors like Sam Worthington, Liam Neeson, and Ralph Fiennes, Clash of the Titans turned out to be so bad. With so many Greek myths, not to mention the original 1981 adaptation to work off of, it's amazing that the acting, script, and overall plot fell flat.
Rolling Stones Peter Travers stated that "The film is a sham, with good actors going for the paycheck and using beards and heavy makeup to hide their shame." Although calling the actors ashamed of the film is a stretch, we can't necessarily argue with Travers -- the film was pretty horrible.
Marvel Studios Took Back The Rights To Fantastic Four
It seems as though no matter how hard the studio tries they're unable to get one of the oldest crime-fighting teams in the MCU correct on the big screen. Fantastic Four should have stayed with Marvel Studios but, alas, they decided to go with 20th Century Fox. The rights have since been returned to Marvel Studios and yet another reboot is currently in the works. This time in the MCU.
Fantastic Four's claim to fame is winning four Golden Raspberry Awards: Worst Director, Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-off or Sequel, and Worst Picture. Here's to hoping the next film is a bit better than the last attempts!
We Wanted The Circle to Be Good
With Tom Hanks, Emma Watson, and Karen Gillian starring in The Circle, one would think the film would be a huge success. That couldn't be further from the truth. While the techno-thriller did make $40 million worldwide, critics and audience members were not overly impressed by the "transparency" of the characters.
One critic says that "the future is now and it's scary. Too bad The Circle isn't." Another expresses the lack of surprise when it comes to the plot, saying that you know the tech company is evil right from the start.
Slender Man Was Surprisingly Boring
Based on the internet character Slender Man who makes kids go insane, the film was questionable from the get-go. When it was released in 2018, it was met with negative reviews, including inconsistent tone, characters, and story. And it's never a good sign when people call a supernatural horror movie 'boring.'
David Ehrlich of Indiewire calls the movie "a tasteless and inedibly undercooked serving of the Internet's stalest creepypasta, Slender Man aspires to be for the YouTube era what The Ring was to the last gasps of the VHS generation. But... there's one fundamental difference that sets the two movies apart: The Ring is good, and Slender Man is terrible."
